Ha, and I though I was crazy. I told several people this and they had never heard anything like this! Well, I had the exact same happen to me. The oem bolts and clips that ford uses are make of some tinny cheep aluminum stuff. My clips kept breaking and the upper bolts were snapping. Anyway, your best bet is NOT to use ford clips and bolts. Take the OEM clip with you to Napa and bolt for the upper shock. Get the Napa clips which is a harder medal. Then get a four grade 5 bolts. If they are a bit longer or hair shorter you'll be ok. The Napa clips are a little different, you'll have to angle each clip so one is at like pointed at 4 o'clock and the opposite one is pointed at 8 o'clock. Then you have to angle the shock to get the first bolt started not pushing it up all the way, then get the 2nd bolt start and tighten evenly till shock is flush to frame. You'll understand when you see the clips are longer than the ford oems that's why you have to angle them. Use red locktite so, they don't back out. This is what I did and problem solved.
What I found is that the OEM Bolts and Clips ford sells are just not good for after market shocks, why cant answer that, but you'll see that the Napa clips are beefier and for sure grade 5, the gold color bolts are super strong. I think thought nappas were coated with red, but they are grade 5.
Like you said no problem with oem shocks. But when I upgraded to Bilstiens the cheep ford crap kept braking. It took some time as did yours, and I notice spongy ride then an occasion thump or banging when hitting bumps and the assend had a mind of its own with the bolts broken!
This should do ya !

So spongyness, and really leaning is a sign of broken bolts? I also have the same symptoms on the drivers side rear, and it sounds like there is a handfull of washers gingling around under the truck! I will have to check those in the morning.

I installed Rancho's on the X about 15k miles ago, and used Ford's torque specs on the bolts. Nothing broke yet. It hasn't been mentioned, but the torque value for the rear shock upper mounting bolts is only 17 foot pounds. To me, that's just a turn or two more than hand tight. Rear shock lower mounting bolt torque is 46 foot pounds.
Check it out here.

i think i got it, do not use the ford replacment bolts, not sure if they are different for different years but here is what i found,
the bolts they supply work fine on the inboard holes, but are about 5 mm to long on the outboard holes, on a 2000 they must ahve used shorter bolts then the replacments or different sizes, but they are longer...
when i installed first time i put them all in finger tight, then tightend the inners first, harder to get to, the shock was then tight, then i thightened the outer untill snug, but it was actually bottoming out on the frame above the nut
looked at it close tonight and seen the difference, went to lowes, got a better grade clip, exactly the right size, got some grade 10 8mm X 25 MM long and all went together fine,
see how long it last this time

I will check them out. I know my lower shock mount on the drivers side is loose, gotta hit it with the impact...not sure how it got loose, never off road, and NEVER abused!
