I have a 2000 V10 with 90,000 that I have owned it since last May.
What i do not like is when turning you have to turn back to straighten out.
Now this may sound weird, but all other trucks and cars tend to self center to some degree.
This truck will not even attempt to self center.
I am used to it, even though it catches me off gaurd at times. What I do not like is the lady will NOT drive this due to this.
Can anyone else relate, have the same issues, is the a common issues with these beasts, or tell me of a fix.
thanks. |

I am going through this right now. You need to replace the steering box and Steering pump at the same time. Completely flush out the steering lines. I first made the mistake of replacing one at a time and did not flush the lines out. Within a week it came back to haunt me.

The degree of caster determines how quickly steering returns to a central position. |

I just replaced my steering gear box and flushed system. However, I did not replace the steering pump. Will I have problems in the near future again with my steering box?

sfd...what was it about the pump that led you to replace it and flush the lines. I've heard, no personal experience, that Ford has had problems with this pump and it's not extraordinary for a new one to need replacement. Unfortunately, I'm having a bit of a tussle with the dealer as we speak over the replacement of my box. The truck is under warranty and the service department flatly refuses to even acknowledge the truck has a problem.

Well I went through 3 steering boxes till I realized two things. 1st is Ford no longer sells new boxes and rebuilt are hit or miss. After the third box I still had problems. I had new ball joints and tie rod ends. So I looked flushed the power steering system. Out came debris from 1st box. That hwelped but the third box reacted the same way. I then replaced pump, lines, box and fluid. All total about $1000.oo plus time. Works well now!

How LONG has this been working well?
Not sure if its worth the hassle and expense to replace these every 6 months or less |
