Ken,
Now is you chance to prove how much you have learned about the Islands. I will be going to Maui in Aug. and need a few tips of things to do. I am going with 2 other families, so anything is going to appeal to someone. I personally like to go off the beaten path, I will be there about a week.

Jerry, thanks for thinking of me! I've been to Maui numerous times. The island has so much to offer...'cept affordable housing...
Okay, let me share a few of my favorite things I did there.
1.Drive up Haleakala. The views are spectacular! Make sure you take warm clothes as it is usually about 40-50° up there. You'll be able to see the plant that ONLY grows up there. No other place in the WORLD is this plant located. Cool... You also be able to see my island a bit better up there. Try and wave if you see my Excursion driving and I'll flash my lights.
2. Rent a Harley. The best way to see & experience these islands is on a bike. So if you are a licensed motorcyclist, I highly suggest this. My wife and I took the Northern route of the island a few years back. It was a fanatastic day!
3. Get this book. Maui Revealed It has some great tips and things to do. The guy lives here on the Big Island, I think, the Big Island book is fantastic so I can only imagine that the Maui book will be just as good.
4. Take the ferry from Lahaina to Lanai. http://www.go-lanai.com/
One of my favorite things to do but usually is done the other way arond for me. You see, my mom lived on Lanai for 13 years so I would take the ferry to Maui! Anyway...Lanai makes a great day trip. You can rent a Jeep for the day and see some of the other parts of the island. It is quite small. A must do IF you rent a Jeep, is "Garden of the Gods". It is just cool to drive through. Red dirt, moon-type landscape, killer ocean view, lava rock everywhere....all of that leads you to a perfect beach. Perfect because it is usually deserted, has miles of white sand, has a great backdrop of Molokai and is a great beach to lose all your clothes and not feel "weird" about doing it.
You don't have to go anywhere once you land on Lanai as you come in next to a killer beach called Manele Bay. It has a neat tidal pool next to it, has great snorkeling, perfect sand and you may be able to eat at the Manele Bay Hotel. Pack a lunch and use the day as your "I'm just gonna sit on the beach all day" day.
You will realize that a week just isn't long enough. If you were there for two weeks, I'd recommend a short hop over to my island. So maybe next time!
Hope some of this helped.
