My wife and I are taking our five children ages 5 to 12 to Disney World. Here is the problem (besides taking five kids on a road trip to disney world)

How long of a trip is that for you?

Our kids are between the same ages (we only have 4 though). When we would travel on ling trip when we lived on the Mainland i would always try and drive the most in hte early mornings, stop for food and stretching and then drive for no more than 4 hours with them awake. One movie in the middle and maybe a game.

I never drove more than 500 in a day unless they were asleep for most of it.

Just my .02

Find interesting things to do on the way too. We would stop and see "things" on the way. Amazing what a 45 minute stop will do for the kid's attention span.

We always get Books on CD for the adults and movies with headphones for the kiddos...

a store called "Earful Books" here in Arlington that has 1000's of titles on audio cd and tape...
also Any Cracker Barrell will let you BUY the book on cd or tape at one location and return it at ANY other cracker barrell.... less a few bucks rental....

Check it out...
depending on your likes, anything by David Baldachi(?) is great... murder mystery....

Happy travelling !

Here is the problem (besides taking five kids on a road trip to disney world) We have an 03 Eddie Bauer, is there any way to have the movie sound in back and still be able to listen to the radio or cd's up front. I have never really cared before as we have never taken the beast on a long trip. Any suggestions anything anyone else has tried and worked or not worked...

There are five children and one possibly two jacks for headphones.

how about a protable DVD player?
buy a another set of headphones, trust me when I say it will be money WELL spent ahead of time

I know on mine i can have the rear support a different station then the front
By pressing the 3/5 presets it allows the rear to adjust what they want. At least for what the manual tells me Never actaully tried it.

I do have the stock DVD system in the X, so we have that base covered. Unfortunately we are limited to a week, and four days will be needed for travel there and back. Mapquest says 24 hours drivetime to get from MPLS to Orlando, so needless to say 500 miles per day probably won't work. We have a small travel fridge and hopefuly some new movies for the kids. I agree that stops are important for stretching and sanity sake. I wish I had Satelite radio, that would make our trip zip along nicely. Alot of good ideas out there keep them coming.

There's nothing like some good clean comedy CDs to bring a family together.

Bill Cosby, Jeff Foxworthy etc. etc.

If you can find he CD by Brian Regan (he only has one) it is WELL worth it!!!!

I guess I have some experience with this, as Summer 04 we took our four kids on a 24 day 7500 romp from New England to the Hover Dam and back. They were 7, 8, 10 and 11 at the time.

1. Set goals, like a sticker every 100 miles, or something like that.
2. We only allowed one DVD a day. There is enough of this beautiful country out there that they don't need to miss it all because they're staring at Sponge Bob for 8 hours in the back.
3. Journal. Have them write every day about the previous day, what they liked, what they didn't.
4. Be flexible. If you see something cool, stop and smell the roses when you can.
5. Build in stuff that they'll like to do. Stop for ice cream, a quick run through a park, something fun once or twice a day.

When traveleing with the children we can get pretty stressed out. So we found a great answer:

It takes a few extra minutes to brush the bugs and knots out of the kids hair when we arrive.

But the parents are rested and happy........

I know we should be parents of the year!
