OK, I'm currenly on my first corss country trip with my 28' Airstream, which is why I bought my 2005 PSD Excursion 4x4 in the first place...
Coming from Austin TX to New Mexico and Arizona, no problem, but once I hit the mountains in Southern california (Imperial county on I- , I had some issues.
First off, the trailer is ~7500 lbs, and I am using an Equ-li-zer hitch for sway control and weight distribution. The truck is not full of gear, but is carying the wife, 2 dogs, and myself. Fuel is approx 1/2 tank at the time....
As we enter Cali from Airzona, we lower the speed from 70 to 60 MPH as cali law is 55 MPH with the trailer. an hour later we start to approach the mountains and my touque-shift transmission (in tow/haul mode) drops to approx 2300 RPM to compensate for the incline and speed. A few minutes later, what I can only describe as a World war 2 propeller driven dive bomber sound comes from the engine. I immediatly drop the cruise off and the throttle and speed drop, the sound goes away. I hit the accellerator again, and the "dive bomber" comes back and I got a bit freaked out. All temp gauges on the instument cluster are nominal, they havent moved from flat land or in the mountain climbs.
So, I put on the the flashers and inch my way up at 35-4- MPH trying to manipulate the RPMs so the "dive bomber" noise would go away (at lower RPMs...)
Was this sound normal or was this the turbo overheating? Keep in mind I dont have any guages so I dont know my boost pressure or EGTs, but I was hoping someone could tell me what happened here.
The truck feels fine after this... no lag in power or any other weird noises, so I think my turbo is still good. (if it wasn't would it still be under warranty if I am still within my 3/36?)
Thanks

Did you hear "Air Raid Sirens"? Sorry, could not resist! Everything should be fine. I had the same experience the first time I hooked up my 35 footer. Driving North on I-85 through South Carolina I started hitting some good hills in the summer. Then WHOOOOSH, I thought the 'black helicopters' were hovering over me! I also pulled over after looking over intrumentation and found nothing wrong. Found out later on this site that this is a normal occurance (and one you want to hear) as it is the cooling fan kicking in (can't remember the technical term, I'm sure someone here will chime in on that)
Hope you enjoyed the trip! These things make one heck of a tow vehicle eh?

As Gary mentioned it sure sounds like the clutch fan locked in when the engine temperature gets to a certain point. Reminds me of the flex fan days at the track

Greg / Bill,
Thanks for the info, so the cooling fan is actually a clutch fan which is why it sounds like a whine and seems to be tied into my RPMs? How do I know I wasn't cooking the turbo? It was SO LOUD!!
I don't have guages so I'm not sure at what speed/RPM I'm even supposed to tow at in that situation (6% incline).
Thanks

You are having the same exact reaction I did! It did not believe it at first either. Now, when you say loud, do you mean a loud 'screaching' or long, LOUD, extended 'whoosh' that will dissipate when you let off the accelerator? It should not be screaching. I'm telling you, it is the loudest fan I have ever heard on a vehicle in my life Let's put it this way, my wife never notices vehicle noises (the engine could drop a rod and she would not notice it ), but when this fan kicked in the first time she even looked at me and asked 'what is that?' I hope that reassures you! If not, I have a 2004 with 38k miles on it now and running like a champ and still making the noise when I pull on a hot day on a grade.

Now that is tempting. Problem is we are totein' the trailer up to Wisconsin in May to visit relatives and stuff. (I would rather have a beer in Texas! ) Maybe next May I will put in a request to the cruise director that we head to Texas, "...and while were here honey, they have this PowerStroke Rally that might be fun!" I may need to work on that!
