My 2001 Excursion JUST started having issues after 140k miles...knock on wood. It started by hesitating at stop lights, then while driving it goes to ZERO RPM's...yet does not stall. Recently at a stop light it had stalled. It will start right back up, with no hesitation. It is now getiing worse, and it intermittenly stalls on the HIGHWAY while depressing the gas. It hesitates a lot more while driving, yet idles perfectly when I go out and work on it...I have done the normal things, have a K&N Air Filter, cleaned again, and a new gas filter. I saw on pasr threads that CPS can be an issue...can someone explain? My next step is to go to dealer...but I am avoiding like the plague! NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON! Help!

If the engine is running but the accelerator pedal doesn't respond it'll possibly be the accelerator pedal sensor, certain 2002 and 03 Excursion pedal assemblies was involved in a recall couple years back so it's possible you have a bum sensor.
Quote:
Accelerator Pedal Recall 03B03:
This recall is for certain 2002 and 2003 F-series and Excursions with adjustable pedals. The reason is an intermittent sensor performance problem. The check engine light may come on and you may experience a lack of throttle response. Affected vehicles are 2002's built in Mexico from July/August 01 through December 21, 01, and 2002 and 2003's built in Kentucky from July/August 01 through October 17, 02. This recall will be in effect until March 31, 2004, regardless of mileage.

Now when your 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel just dies when driving down the road/freeway or sitting at a traffic light I'll have to say with confidence it'll be the Cam Position Sensor. The CPS can shut down the engine and most of the time the engine will re-start.
The CPS itself runs $50-100 depending on where you go,but it's something you easily can change out in 10-15 minutes(just did our 02 a couple weeks ago)

Here's an informative CPS THREAD to check out while you're here

I just called the dealer, and four other parts centers in San Diego...CPS part ranges from $150-$250? Beleive it or not, the dealer was not the most expensive! Are we talking the Camshaft Position Sensor...and where can I get cheaper?.....WHOOOPS...didnt follow your directions...went to the Infamous 7.3L CPS thread like you had said and found what I needed! Thanks Bill! I will let you know how it works out!

Always trying to get the info out as quickly as possible! Give PowerStrokeShop.com a call for the CPS as they have it for under $100
