Now that we're back up and running agaqin, let's try this one more time...
I'm getting ready to install a heavy duty winch bumper on my 2001
Excursion 4x4, and the welder who is helping me with the fabrication
raised one concern. He mentioned that the replacement bumper
may interfere with the operation of the airbags (collision, not
suspension). I'm not sure that this will really be a problem, but
I figured I'd start by asking here. I looked through the archives,
but could only find posts claiming that front end replacement
bumpers will not affect operation of the airbag trigger sensor,
but no supporting details. As my fellow engineers among us
can attest, the devil's always in the details. Does anyone have
information as to where on the Excursion the airbag trigger
sensor is located?
Thanks,
- Jim L

The airbag sensor is located up under the dash kinda behind the radio. As most may not know, the airbag sensor is not a pressure switch in the bumper but rather a decelleration sensor.
It always seemed to me that aftermarket bumper could allow the airbag to go off sooner since the bumpers are usually stronger and do not collapse like the factory ones. This would transmit more energy to the occupants and the sensor (and at a slower speed too) rather than have it get absorbed across the body structure. But hey...I'm no engineer.

Thanks for the information, Monsta. I had pretty much expected
that the excursion used something like this, but wanted to confirm
to be sure. I knew my old Durango had an inertia type deceleration
sensor, located near the geometric center of the truck. I figured the
Excursion would use a similar mechanism, but couldn't find any
information as to where it is located.
Thanks again,
