I wouldn't get all worried about a new tranny just yet. It is usually the diesel guys who tear up transmissions. That 4R100 is right at it's peak torque load handling ability with at PSD in front of it.

Sometimes the speed sensor on top of the rear diff can get covered with gunk or just go out of whack causing the tranny to shift weird. Typically...but not always!...a fouled up VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) will also manifest symptoms in driveability problems like what you describe and sometimes will light the ABS light and other things.

It's cheap and easy to inspect. Try removing it off the top of the rear diff. 10mm (??) socket is all that's needed. If it is clean, un-plug it and make sure the connection is good and clean. If dirty...well clean it.

Now, no guarantee that will fix ANYTHING but it doesn't hurt to check it out.

Have you changed that fluid yet??

Fire,
It can't hurt to change the fluid.
I did that when mine went bad.
Hoping to find the cheap fix.

Ok so the sensor on the diff got replaced to the tune of $36 but it didn't fix the problem.... Currently hearing more noise coming from the transmission area. The Ford dealership tells me there is at least two more sensors that affect the transmission, one at the front and rear of the vehicle. But with the noise being heard more, is it futile to think at this point that it could be a different sensor? I'm seriously thinking of taking it to Aamco before the end of today......

Any help is once again appreciated

Thanks

It's been awhile since I've been underneath my EX. Is there a drain plug? If there is, draining through a paper filter will detect any metal particles revealing a failure of some sort.

Well two solenoids which control some kind of pumps went out and the clutch plates and 2nd gear were completely gone so it is a remanufactured tranny for us to the tune of $2395 from Aamco.....
I drove the X properly on the trip so is this some kind of sick thing that goes wrong with Ford trannies that have only 50,000 miles on them?

I'd get a ford reman before I went with Aamco. Known too many people who have tried their junk. You might be slightly better off going to a junkyard an pulling one out.

Or you could get a BTS and it will be the last trans you buy for that vehicle

01 Excursion. Gauges with AIH Delete, AIS Air Filter system, CCV Mod, 4' MBRP, BTS Trans, 6.0L Trans Cooler and Intercooler, DP-Tuner F6 chip, ITP In Tank Mod and Boost Annihilator, Diesel Innovation's Regulated Fuel kit, BTS Big Oil system, GTP38R Turbo with 1.15 A/R housing and BDP Stage II AC injectors. Bilstein Shocks with U code front and A code Rear. Billet thermostat housing

FireFoxxy,
Before you get a rebuilt from Aamco or any other franchised repair shop check around.
Find the local drag race assn and call a few of the members. They can tell you who builds transmisions that take their abuse! These guys also have to pull their cars with all the extras on trailers.
The point is that you are about to drop a bunch of cash on a transmision. Alittle research will keep you going a long way.
