I've had a rattle in what I was thought was my left front door/window that's been driving me literally NUTS for I don't know how long. The rattle only happened above 50 mph and was in the top back corner (i.e. closest to the back door) of the door, which was directly into my left ear while I was driving. I tried all the conventional stuff (e.g. lubing the weatherstripping, pulling the door panel, etc.).

My problem was that I couldn't tell if the rattle was coming from the window or the door. I wised up and spent $8 on a mechanics stethiscope, put it on and hit the road at +50 mph (I'm sure I looked like a nut). Great $8 because it told me, immediately, that the rattle was coming from the door.

I scoured the back edge of the front door and couldn't find anything loose or anything that looked like it would cause the problem. I grabbed some 3" wide painters tape, closed the drivers door and ran the tape vertically from the top of the door to the door handle covering the 1/4" opening between the front and rear driver side doors. Back up to +50 mph and NO RATTLE. I pulled over and removed the tape and then also pulled the 18 - 20" piece of weatherstripping off the leading edge of the rear drivers side door (it simply snaps in place and runs from the top down to the middle of the rear door). I got back in and proceeded back up to +50 mph and NO RATTLE. Problem solved.

I hope the above may come in useful for those of you with a rattle in your left ear. The rattle in my right ear is usually the wife

I've read somewhere that some folks are inserting lengths of rubber tubing inside the weatherstripping cavity. Whether it was to reduce rattles or improve sealing, I don't know.

What is this tubing you guys speak of?

I have all my doors rattling and while I know most of it is caused by the stereo shaking everything loose. After I tighten and adjust the doors I would like to get a better seal. What are you guys doing?

Your weatherstripping around the doors has a cylindrical void inside running the length of the w'strip. Some folks have lubricate & inserted rubber tubing in that void to stiffen-up the w'strip some. If you run a search here, or at one of the other "X-sites" (pun intended), you may find some threads on the subject.

The tubing is 3/8 inch(I believe) polyvinyl clear tubing. You can get ti at Lowes/Home depot. Some people like the 1/4 inch. Get 20 foot lengths per door. You can snip open a weep hole in the weatherstripping at either bottom corner. Use diluted dish soapor something similar as a lubricant and you can work it all the way around. Since I am a dentist, I have access to syringes and needles. As I progressed, if the tubing started binding, I just injected soapy water in front of it. You could probably add soapy water at corner weep holes as well.

Good luck!

Beneath me? Heck ... I thought it kind of corny myself. Oh well.

Dentist? My wife is the office manager for a local dental practice. She's been there 27 years now, and has seniority over the current owner. He takes real good care of her since she makes the place tick.
