My original tires were the Steeltex 6 ply load rating E. I'm wondering if others are replacing them with 10 ply or is everyone staying with 6. I'm wondering if my handling might improve with 10 ply especially when towing my 10,000 pound trailer.

my half used Michelins, rated at 8 ply did great until I took them slightly off-road in the Big
Bend TX desert and ran over some thornless creosote bushes....quickly had 2 sidewall punctures as big a # 2 pencil, but nothing in the tread.
Two very flat tires, one spare and 2 miles from the nearest paved highway. Luckily I had a plug kit and a bicycle pump and the next morning was up and rolling again. Limped 60 miles north to the nearest town to buy 2 used 285-16's and the sidewall plugs held fine, although I kept it down to 50 mpg all the way to town.
I've since been told by the locals to stay off the creosote....cactus was no problem.
My Michelins have performed great on my mostly highway drives at high speeds, got 45K on them and they look nearly new tread wise. Got 'em fgr $200 each as a set of 4 at Discount Tire and been very pleased with 'em. |
