Anyone have any experience with both of these vehicles? Mainly to be used for limited hauling (camper at or under 9000 lbs.) - probably used less than 5000 miles a year. Most likely will get an 00-02 model, hopefully with as low miles as possible. Don't want to go Diesel since I can't justify the extra cost upfront, extra fuel cost, and extra maintenance given how few miles I will be driving - it seems it would take a long time to break even.

Mostly interested in comfort for long trips, though reliability is a factor - however, given my low mileage usage that isn't as big of a factor as comfort and hauling.

No, I do NOT want a truck for various reasons, mostly dealing with large dogs that need space in the vehicle, as well as the occasional need to haul around 4-5 adults.

Any advice, experience, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I went with the diesel because the Suburban could not handle the load. I had a 1 place enclosed trailer and it pulled it just fine. However, going up an hill I was doing 30 at WOT. Either I supercharged it or I would have to get a turbodiesel. I went for the latter.

I do not have any hands-on experience with the 'Burb.

I do agree that one must drive a horrendous amount of miles to financially justify a diesel ... though I'll admit that I want one just for the sake of having one ... but the V10 will tow 9K# with ease. I believe the V10 X (with 3.73 gear) is rated to tow 11K#, but what's the 'Burb rated at?

I've gotten 11.3 MPG towing 5600# (open car trailer) on a combination of interstate and 2-lane highways.

Have you searched the Trailer Life forum (Tow Vehicles) at the following link?

Lots of talk there on multiple brands of TV.

I thought the V10 is harder on gas than the PS is on diesel when towing large loads? I would think so since diesel has more energy per unit than gas.

I would also think, based on my experience that when you go up to higher altitudes, cylinder filling is not as good and so you need more air. Hence the turbo, supercharger or some sort of forced induction.

I am getting about 10, give or take towing 8500# of an RV. That has a large sail area for the front unlike an open trailer.

Just a tip for ya.There is a gentleman over on www.thedieselplace.com he lives in Aurora
CO, near DEN.He does conversion where they put in the 6.6 Durumax into the burb.Takes like a 2 inch to squeeze it but the end product is nice.I woulda went that route if I had a lot o money and maybe if he took trades.

The V10 does get worse MPG towing than a diesel, but there's the trade-off. The initial $$$-premium one pays to have a diesel, plus the higher cost of diesel fuel in most urban areas, means you don't actually see a savings via better MPG until you've got between 175K and 190K miles on the truck. The diesel may last longer, and resale value is greater, but that premium can buy me a lot of regular 87-octane gasoline.

I am long tired of a vehicle before I rack up that many miles, and I've gotten 200K miles out of gasoline engines without any major work (never even removed valve covers on a few other than to replace a leaky gasket). And even if the diesel engine does last a long time, what's the condition of the rest of the truck? Probably looks pretty tired by then, don't you think?

Please don't think I'm knocking diesels. I like 'em, AND I want one. I just can't justify buying one because it doesn't suit my driving needs. Conversely, if I was a full-time RVer, there'd be no other choice.

A friend has a Yukon Denali 6.0l gas and loves it. He tows a boxy 7500lb travel trailer. I wish the Excursion had the Denali's level of comfort and luxury, with things like automatic load leveling, smooth soft ride, smart dash/controls layout, etc. Check if the 'burb has such features (or maybe consider a Denali). When they switched from a late-90's suburban to then Denali and were towing the trailer, they claim they had to keep looking behind them to see if it was still there; in other words it handled the trailer better than the 'burb. He also claims 12 mpg towing the trailer, but I say baloney on that one.

I considered the 'burb as well, but the depreciation on the gas unit was too high to swallow, the mileage of the big gas engine (is it a 7.5l?) was awful, the cargo room was smaller than the 'X, and I think the rear 3rd row seat was smaller than the 'X's.
