I hope someone can help me here. Cause this is definately the place to ask questions.

I was heading to Daytona Beach on Friday for the Turkey Run. I was powering my laptop with the 12v port next to the ashtray. About 3 1/2 hours (250 miles) into the trip I heard a spark like noise come from the 12v port and then I noticed a spark shoot out from under the dash. (Not good) Right over the center hump to be exact. Then the 12v port lost power.

Now, it gets even weirder. Probably 1/2 an hour has passed since the 12v spark incident. As I'm driving along at 80mph on I-95 with the wife and kids all of a sudden the gauges spiked all the way to the right and the engine shut off for about 1-2 seconds. (My fear was that the steering wheel was going to lock and I wasn't going to be able to steer at 70 some mph). I know the engine shut down because as soon as the gauges spiked I checked my throttle and there was no response. Also, for some reason my trip meeter was reset back to 0 after the gauges had spiked. I was totally freaked out. Fortunately, I arrived at Daytona Beach safely with no further issues that night.

The next morning I checked the fuse box and just as I had suspected the fuse was blown to the 12v port. As I put the key in the ignition to attempt to start her up I noticed all the gauges spiked to the the right again and then she started right up with no problem. Once again though, the trip meter was reset back to 0.

Got home on Sunday very late with no problems at all. Had to wait till Monday to check for a short or burnt wires near the 12v port.

Nothing. No burnt wires, nothing was melted or even smelled like an electrical short.

Put a new fuse in and the port worked fine. I did disconnect the batteries for about 1/2 hour to see if I could erase any codes or what ever. Put the cables back on, whent to start and you guessed it the gauges spiked to the right again but she fired right up w/ no problem.

Here's a little info on my X. 2005, 4X4, 6.0, Limited, with 39k miles, recently had the 30k mile service including the fuel filter which I change every 10k miles, only modification is a drop in air raid drop in filter. I had over half a tank of fuel so I don't think it's a fuel issue. No check engine light.

Since this thing can shut down anytime my wife is taking the kids to school in my other truck. Better safe than sorry. Thanks in advance for any help, Tony

It could be many things from dying batteries, bad alternator, loose ground or a short somewhere.

I fried a turbo in my 05 X becuase the control wire going to the turbo chaffed on something and it fried the controller in the turbo.

I would take the X to the dealer. Hopefully you bought the extended warranty since you are past 36k miles...

Mike thanks for the reply.

Fortunately, I do have the extended warranty but I just hate going to the dealer. I don't sleep well at night knowing my X is at the dealer. At this point though, I might not have a choice.
