My alumanium wheels are in bad shape, lots of grime and brake dust. I am not wanting to go buy new ones just yet. Does any one have any suggestion on how I can get these back to a decent shape. I have used Super Clean so far and it has done a good job of cleaning the brake dust and grime. But I still have of brake grime that has spotted the wheel up. Is there a do it yourself article to show how to get the remaining grime and then polish wheel out. I have heard of guys doing this but I have no experience in this my self. Or do I send them out to be done professionally. I have searched the web and come up empty. Any help you guys have I would appreciate it.
Thanks. Everyone have a very Happy New Year.

ya know, I probably would be interested in that too...
course I'm one of those bad owners that don't give the Ex the TLC it deserves....
$5 exterior wash once or twice a month and RARELY enough attention to have it's picture taken
and I SHOULD - it's a good looker when clean !!!

A lot of what you need to do depends on how far "gone" your wheels are. For minor discoloration, haze or oxidation, some Mother's aluminum polish will suffice (lots of elbow grease needed). If you need to mechanically polish your wheels (pitted or heavily oxidized), I highly recommend Eastwood for polishing supplies (link below). I've used their stuff many times. I have found that the 3" and 6" diameter polishing wheels work best with a tool that doesn't spin them too fast, such as a pneumatic handheld drill. A pneumatic die grinder spins way too fast ... could "burn" the metal. Don't try an electric drill unless it's one you're willing to part with, and many of today's electric drills don't rotate fast enough for polishing.

Mothers powerball (small) , a drill, and their aluminum polish. Brings back crappy wheels nice.

They are very popular with motorcyclists for their cast wheels and they work great on the diamond plate on the fire trucks at my fire department. |
