2002 Excursion 4*4, 7.3psd. I am getting a vibration, more like a deep, low humming noise in the floor between 65 and 75 mph. I can feel it in my feet. It sounds like it is coming from the center of the vehicle. I have just replaced the tires and the problem was there with the old tires. The vibration goes away at 80 mph. My local shop thought it could be the driveshaft so we sent it off to be checked. No luck. The driveshaft shop said it was in balance. There is what looks like a rubber dampener around the driveshaft near the differential. The Superduty trucks do not have this piece. Could this part be the cause? I tried putting the truck in neutral at 75 mph to take away the load on the drivetrain but the noise is still there. I also have my eye on the trans mount because I am experiencing another noise/vibration at low speeds when I am on and off the gas - sounds much like a manual transmission. Has any one experienced this problem and know how to fix??

Tim,
Thanks for the response. It sounds like we have the same problem. I just returned from a 500 mile round trip to NJ and the noise/vibration is getting much worse. It was so bad at 70 mph that I was not sure if we would make it back! I called my mechanic while I was driving and he strongly believes it is the pinion bearings since they just checked the driveshaft and installed new tires. I am taking it in on Monday and I will let you know what they find.

I guess your going to get your pinion bearing fixed before me...let me know if it fixes it. I'd also like to know if you have metal in the rear end and if you do, are they replacing the pinion and ring gear as well. Thanks.

Oh, this is tempting, but I will bite my lip. Or in this case, wring my hands from typing something I may regret later. |

Tim,
I got the my Ex. back today from the shop. The head mechanic and owner of the shop (who owns a nice Ex. himself) did all the work. He found the Pinion bearings to be in bad shape but not terrible shape. He also found a bad, pitted wheel bearing on the passenger side during teardown. He did not notice any large amount of metal bits in the rear diff. I may have cought this in time. He also found that the parking brake cable had been hanging up on the same side. The vibration is gone at 70mph! There is still a bit of humming noise but this may be normal for a PSD Ex. drivetrain. I am still going to look at the trans mount. I forgot to have them look at this. Good luck with your rig.
Brian

This is great info. Thanks for posting. I will have mine in the shop shortly and will post on my thread the results. Do you mind sharing what it cost to have your work done? Did you take your truck to Ford or a local shop? Thanks.

Tim, I use a local shop that I have a fleet account with for my business. I dont know what the cost of repairs was because they have not sent the bill. As soon as I know the total I will make another post on the site. Thanks, Brian
