I have been experiencing problems with my factory installed keyless kepad the past few days. Symptoms, you put in the code and sometimes the drivers door doesn't unlock. You have to put it in a few times for the drivers door to unlock. Pushing the 3/4 button after the default code has been put in, no longers unlocks the rest of the doors. Pushing the 7/8 and 9/0 to lock the car, you have to push the buttons a few times to get the doors to even lock. I am assuming these wireless keypads run off a battery? Or are they hard wired? If they run off a battery, does anyone know how to replace it? Or does anyone have any ideas of why the keypad is acting up? It appears when I push each key, that they light on the keypad comes up ok, so I don't think it is just one single key that is acting up. Just my best guess is all...

Thats the same symptoms our 2002 has developed over the last year or so and the finger pointing goes to the VSM or Vehicle Secuity Module. It's the controller that often goes belly up after a few years, all we can do is replace it with a new module but don't see the need to spend on it right now.
And Yes,it's hardwired to the battery/vehicle's electrical system.

Thanks for the quick response.... I guess once it totally dies, I will pursue the route of the VSM. I guess until then, I won't try to depend 100% on the keypad entry any more. So, much for the days of feeling safe locking the keys in the car, when I went out and about without them in my pocket to loose...

yep, same here, key remotes work just fine, just the damn keypad. The question is does anyone have a part number for the VSM? Also, anyone know of a place to get it other then ford? I searched ebay, but no luck. I also searched the web, but didn't find any places to buy the VSM from, but then again, I don't have the part number for it either....

I have been down this road my keypad requires an extra press to "wake up the system" The local dealer said they could start chasing the problem around but said it would be expen$ive. In order to get my fobs to work I have to first press one of the keyless door buttons.
The other problem is on the 2002 excursions the VSM is built into the GEM. At least thats what Ford tells me. And unless you have the ford laptop thingy you will need them to dump your old GEM and program your new one. I am waiting for the whole system to blow out so I have to get it fixed then I can install my remote start. Now it dosn't pay to have remote start if I have to run out and press the button on the door first.
I'd rather be in the boat with a drink on the rocks then in the drink with the boat on the rocks.... But either way theres gonna be a good story!!! |

Well, I thought I would get some time out of it before the unit really went whacky.... well, it went whacky already. I took my keys with me and I left my vehicle during the day for about 3 hours. Well, I came back and I noticed when I cranked the motor over the batteries were struggling to turn over the motor. Well, I went to another store and when I got out of the vehicle with my keys in my hand I noticed the light chime going like I left the head lights on. Well, too make a long story short, the VSM has taken a major sh@t, because it now keeps all the parking lights on even if the lights are turned off in the car on the light switch. I am assuming this has to be part of alarm when you press the remote or keypad to alarm the car, that is flashes the parking lights. Well, I have a great feature now, NOT, it just keeps the parking lights on all the time. Also, I noticed the horn doesn't beep any more when the alarm is already activated and you press the arm buttong again.
I did just read that bad news in Ford 2002 workshop manual, when replacing the VSM module you have to set some parameters in it. Such as, 4 well anti-lock, overhead trip computer if equipped (OTC), 4 wheen drive control module, driver seat module (DSM), instrument cluster, tire size and axle ratio, security, etc...
So, has anyone ever gotten a quote from a dealer on the cost to replace this module? I am curious if I need to shop around from dealer to dealer, or if the one price I get is what they all charge. Do you think I should act dumb when taking it in for service? Or should I tell them I believe it is the VSM module or something associated with it and to go straight into debugging that?
I wish I was able to access the DTC in the VSM, becaue there is a list of codes that could point me in a specific area if the entire VSM isn't bad.... I am assuming I can't access the VSM codes through the OBDII port....

Would this problem also be related to the keyfob opening the door but the key NOT opening the door? I have not noticed any keypad issue other than I have put my code in and not had it unlock and then as I put the first 2 numbers in again--it opens. sounds like it ought to be a Chrysler! |

The dealer quoted me $330 for the GEM/VSM module plus 1-2 hours to install and reprogram. Or they could start troubleshooting at shop rate. The dealer told me that they also have had problems with the door keypads shorting out internally and causing all sorts of wierd problems. The stuff like the OTC, PATS and DSM are the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) part of the unit. In 2001 the GEM and VSM were seperate modules like my 02 expedition. But for some reason Ford decided to incorporate the VSM into the GEM for our Excursions in 02.
Do you have any aftermarket alarm or remote start installed?

no aftermarket alarm or remote start installed. Now, I am glad I didn't do one so Ford can't point the finger at me for screwing something up. Too bad either way, I will end up paying out of my pocket
