Quick question...... I just did some maintenance on my 2000 V10 4 x 4 Excursion. I wanted to check the tranny fluid level. The oil is not discolored at all. When I pulled the dipstick, engine running and hot, fluid shows up below the hatch marks on the top of the dipstick and about 1/2 inch above the hatch marks on the backside of the dipstick. Same thing happenned a couple of times. I flipped the dipstick over (hatch marks on bottom) and the results were the same, just on opposite sides of the dipstick. I don't want to add any fluid since I can't really tell if I need any. I have no history on it since I just got it last October. Am I low on oil or is it a poor design for the dipstick. Thanks |

I'd go with the higher "reading". Only time you need fluid is if you have a leak. Do you have any leaks?

Yes, there is what I would call a small leak somewhere in 1 of the tranny cooloing lines. I get drip marks on the driveway. The lines are wet at the clip that hold them at the bottom of the radiator. The piping was all dirty with oil mixed in. Hard to tell where its coming from. There is that plastic corregated pipe over them. I dried them off in the accessible places this past weekend and they are wet again this morning. It's finally warming up outside so I was trying to come up to speed on the mechanics of the truck for the first time. I bought it from a Chevy dealership and all the fluids were changed before I took delivery of it. I guess thats what is alarming me. A mechanic that works for Chevy changed the fluids.
Any ideas of where I should look on the piping? Considering the size of the truck, that engine really does fill the space. |

It is a good idea to change the fluid and filter every 30K miles, and this is especially important on the earlier X's, like the '00 thru '02 models. Also, I wouldn't accept a shop's offer to flush-change the fluid. I've heard a few horror stories of tranny failures shortly after such flushes. |

Do you use OEM fluid and filter to do your tranny maintenance? |

No ... namebrand aftermarket fluid & filter should suffice. On my '01, I paid a shop to do it 'cause I was too busy to do it myself. I've yet to change it on the '05, but I'm certain that it's due. |

did they complete a full flush or simply drain the pan. I know that some of the full flush jobs do not include a filter change, which defeats the purpose. Those run around $100, is this the ball park that you paid to have it done? |
