I would guess you have a vacuum leak. No personal experience with this problem, but I've read quiet a few posts about this sort of thing. I'm sure someone with more experience/smarts will be able to help more.
You are aware that you can manually lock the hubs and use the switch to engage/disengage fwd. That eliminates the chance that the hubs won't be locked.
Good luck.

I'm having the same problem intermittenly. Or was, rather. I just went through and checked all my vacuum connections and the operation of the power control valve for the 4X4. Everything works fine now, but something I've always wondered about... does anyone else have a high squeal when they have they're 4X4 engaged with the auto-lock function? Anytime I've got mine on it has a high pitched squeal to it that sounds like a really small air leak?

I removed my auto Ford hubs and put WARN Free Lock hubs on...much simpler and stronger. No vacuum to worry about. |

How do the free-lock hubs work? Are they always locked?

Mine squeals, too. Not terrible, but a little irritating. Usually, one of my three kids cancels it out though.

I hate to admit this but in order to shift in 4X4 the transmission MUST be in NEUTRAL and not park. I learned this the hard way. I have another 4X4 that has to be in park and figured the EX would be the same. The dealer explained to me that park is not a gear and therefore won't allow the shift. You may have other problems though.

That is incorrect. You may shift into 4WD High at any speed below 55mph.
If you are referring to 4WD LOW, then you would be correct. But you can (well I can) still go into 4WD LOW in park.

Oooop's, sorry, you are right. I was referring to 4X4 LOW range. Mine MUST be in neutral to get the low range. I turned the knob to low range while in PARK and nothing happened. I'm not even sure it was in 4X4 high range. That won't ever happen again. Lesson learned.
