I'll start by confirming that, yes, I know I'm a jacka$$ on this one. Today, I pumped 41 gallons of unleaded into my tank. I drove off across town, and at about four miles noticed it was running just a bit rough. I thought I had put low sulfer diesel in and having not ever done so before, wrongfully attributed the roughness to that. Two blocks later, I noticed it wasn't making power so I turned around and let it idle in gear back to the Ford dealership about six blocks away. When idling, everything was normal except for it smoked alot. Once in the parking lot, I shut down and discovered my blunder.
So, now, what do I do? A friend of mine who is a big Cummins diesel fan suggested that I drain the tank and refill it with diesel and then change the fuel filter. Anybody have a better solution or a qualified maintence opinion?
Additionally, I've offered to sell the gasoline that is in the tank to a friend to run in his boat in his outboard motors. I estimate that there is less than three gallons of diesel in with the 41 gallons of gasoline. Anyone know if my friend is at risk in running that slightly tainted gasoline?
Please answer quickly as come Monday, the dealer is going to want to know what my truck is doing occupying his lot and will probably offer to fix it, "at a reasonable price".
Oh yeah, by the way, yes I know that was a boneheaded move.

Not the first nor will you be the last
My Father-in-law was going to "help" and had put the unleaded hose in and was reaching to turn it on !
My reaction may have hurt his feelings but I stopped an oops...
****
Others have said drain the fuel - remove the filters - pump out all the lines (by disconnecting the fuel lines @ the injectors and turning it over IIRC)
replacing fuel filters may have to be multiple times...
Honestly, I'm less inclined to do it myself & would probably let Ford do it - it seems like a JOB !
GOOD LUCK with it...

Thanks for the reply JohnBoy. Well I'm back up and running and this is what I did. I called a friend of mine who said he'd be glad to buy the gas for his boat, at a discount of course. I purchases a variety of fuel siphoning gear and my brother-in-law John , visiting from SD, my friend Steve and I went to siphoning.
It was slow going at first, as it was quite difficult to get the end of the siphon to the fuel, but once the fuel started flowing it was game-on. Steve brought six, five-gallon cans and one, two-gallon can. We put the first two 5ers right into his Explorer and then he took the next two right to his boat as John continued to siphon. John managed to siphon approximately 43+ gallons. I was impressed. I didn't think we'd meet with such success.
The only open autoparts store on the island did not have a fuel filter so I'll have to see if the dealer has one tomorrow. After being so successful in siphoning, and having dire need for the vehicle as our home swells with visiting family, we opted to buy five-gallons of diesel and put it in.
The truck started without protest and commenced to smoke and grumble. I watched the gauges and noted no unusual indications. After approximately three minutes, the smoke went away and the engine settled into its normal, and might it add impressive clackity-clack. It made normal power and seems to be the same old X she was before I pulled the big bonehead.
The gallons of diesel that we put in is almost gone and now I'm off to fill her up. I was hoping for some reassurance from this forum prior to putting 295 lbs of fuel back in the tank, but I think I'll just fill her halfway and change the fuel filter tomorrow.
At this point I'm quite proud of my little PSD for suffering me without much of a protest. I'd still like to hear input from the forum on this.

If someone else has this misforturne, I would suggest that they make sure they have the fuel drain hose attached, put the hose into a bucket or a fuel can, and then turn the ignition on without starting. Use several cycles of this to pump the contaminated fuel from the tank intake, pump and lines up to the fuel filter housing. Do this after siphoning out the fuel tank. You should be able to complete the emptying of the fuel tank.
