When you are towing is it required to turn off the over drive on the trans? I know when going up and down hills and the motor needs to be in the torque range that you need it off. But , does it hurt if you are going down a nice flat road and the motor isn't working hard, can you turn the over drive on?

Well, hunting is when the trans shifts in and out of overdrive. If it is not hunting, leave it in OD.

I use to hear that the OD while towing on cars would ruin the over drive gear. So, I take it the X over drive is built for this? I hate to learn the hard way and ruin the trans....

Well, with a weak trans, it might. However, I talked to Brians Truck Shop and they said it was ok. That man pretty much builds the best E40D and 4R100 so if he says that about the trans, I believe him.

Yep, Tow in OD until it startes hunting between Drive & OD. Ford changed from an aluminum Hub to a steel one in 97. The aluminum one was too soft.
Brian has a custom steel cryo'd unit that is nearly indestructable in his rebuilds.
Look in my Photo's and you can see my trailer loaded behing the Excursion. Cat scales weighed me at 17,800+ & I pulled some pretty nice grades with my stock trans at 72mph in the Wisconsin Dells. I have many trips with many miles with this load & my Excursion now has 120,000 miles on it & the trans is still stock. I'll be upgrading as soon as it breaks or when I feel I just can't wait any longer. The BTS is so sweet! It makes an Excursion feel like it went on a diet & dropped 2,000lbs. I only have one more truck to convert to a BTS, who, hoo. Changes the whole truck.
