HI
I have been having problems with my 2001 Excursion, 4x4, 7.3 stalling. It happens mostly at idle but some times at 30- 40 mph. It will just die but I can shift into nutural and restart everytime. It doesn't seem to do it when on the pedal. Then I can drive several hundred miles with no problem, then a stall. Throws no codes. Does it with or without my superchip activated.
Had to dealer 4 days but they could not duplicate problem!!
New fuel filter, additive etc, nothing seems to help.
Any suggestions.
Thanks
JIm

I've heard the crankshaft position sensor is common to go on the 7.3L and causes problems like that. Not a hard fix I've heard.
Quoted from another Forum;
"It's probably had at least one transmission by now (diesel engines shake the crap out of auto transmissions). Try and find out how recently it was...
Buy a good stereo for it. I ran an E350 diesel 7.3PSD van as a tow vehicle for 100K+ miles, and the penalty you pay for having the engine right below your right knee is NOISE. I loved the van, but didn't miss the clatter when I got a dually.
Chronic thing on 7.3 diesels:
CPS sensor (crank position) - if the engine just randomly quits, but will refire immediately, replace the CPS (all you need is a 10mm wrench...its on the front of the block). Get it from an International dealer (~$95) rather than a Ford dealer (~$180)." -John the Impaler

Try changing the CPS. I had that till my CPS died. Now, there is no problem

I agree with the other posts. I had the same problem with my 2002 Excursion. It is the CPS. I spoke with a PowerStroke Mechanic and he said in order to get it to throw the CPS code, you need to get it to crank for about 20-30 seconds straight without starting for it to throw the code.
This is a very common problem with the 7.3L PSD. The dealer will caharge around $200 for the CPS. You can buy them on ebay for around $50.

Folks,
I was just visiting with a buddy of mine with an '04 with the 6.0L and he says it surges, badly, but very intermittently. He's had it into the dealership three or four times to no avail. Would that also indicate the crankshaft position sensor?
Thanks,
Phil |

I'd lean more towards head gaskets. But stealerships should notice that. Have the ever mentioned anything about the headgaskets? Maybe ask one to look at them specifically.
Haven't heard of CPS problems on 6Ls. |

What he told me was that it will be idling just fine and all of a sudden the RPM's run up. It'll do it for a few seconds and then back to normal. He says it is very intermittent, will do it in park and in drive, has been witnessed by a dealership mechanic that drove it to a bank and back and "replaced s sensor or something" and things were fine for like six months, but now it is doing it again. I personally can't believe he hasn't gotten it resolved by now, but apparently it isn't generating any kind of code and he's had it in like four or five times now... Sorry if it is off topic. If nobody chimes in pretty quickly on this I'll start up a new thread.

Jim,
I have a 2000 X w/ 7.3 that had the same problem you indicate. Talked to my mechanic and he told me to go and buy a CPS and it should fix the problem. I found one on powerstrokeshop.com for around $40, installed it in about 30 min (tough to reach due to the 6"lift), and no more issues. As a sidenote the motor fires faster now than it had previously. Hope this helps.

I have a 01' that just started doing the same thing. I guess they all seem to need a CPS replacement around the same time. I just ordered one and hopefully I will be able to put it in some time later on this week. I felt a bit embarrassed this weekend, when I had 6 people in my car, and the X died.
