Hi,
I'm new here and looking into getting a excursion PSD asap. I currently own a modded 4.6L Expedition and hate the lack of power and am kinda turned off by the mileage. I want the diesel for the crazy power and more room.

My uncle is looking into a F250 and him and my dad have come to hate the 6L from what they've heard. Are they really that bad? He was told the 6L almost put ford out of business which I find hard to believe. I'd get a 7.3L right away only there are limited amount available in this hippy province of Ontario, and those that are I'm afraid will have to many miles to be reliable enough to tweak for more power.

What are the problems with the 6L? Are they throughout all the years?

Much appreciated.

The first year 6.0L (2003) had the most bugs and quirks but nothing that Ford & Navistar couldn't resolve when they got to the table and worked together.
Out of the 6.0L Excursions I believe the 2005 model had the most engine dependability but that all depends on who you ask,I know JohnBoy and other 05 owners will chime in

The 6.0L Excursion was available from 2003.5 to 2005 which of course was the last year of Excursion production.

If you're looking for a 7.3L I've seen most in the 60k to 120k miles range in varying conditions, options and so on,many of them in fact located in Texas for some weird reason

They are out of production so start searching

Get an oasis done and just like with ANY used car, motorcycle, moped, it's the luck of the draw and maintenance !

My business owns an 05 F450 crew cab with the 6.0. This truck has an 11' utility body on it, tows a trailer and hauls five guys around every day. We have never had a single problem in two years. I still like the 7.3 in my Excursion better even though the 6.0 is a bit more high tech and smoother running.
I test drove an 04 Ex with a 6.0 and prefer the sound of the 7.3 also. All a matter of preference!

My wifes 00 X has 177K miles and still runs like it did when bought with 104K miles. Looked for three months back in 03. $20K out the door in mint condition. One owner came from Canada, 100K mile ESP.

Good luck finding one now. The 03 7.3's are going for around $30K here in MN. Most 6.0 X's are $30-40K. Most 00 have a lot of miles on them so if your trying to finance one your going to have problems. 1 in 10 2000 X's are diesel powered. By 2004 the gap was 50/50. In 2005 most had the V10 motor which were said to be extra motors not going into 05 Super Duty's.

2000 was the last run of the forged rod 7.3 so if you want to go crazy that's the motor to get.
2001 was the year of the mechanical diode failure in the tranny.

Over on the RV forums a member tows a huge 40ft+ camper around with his 03 6.0 X and he says he's much happier now than when he had his 00 7.3 X.

They say when the they run they run really good.

BTW, mines been pretty trouble free. A driver side lower ball joint and hub at 165K. Alternator at 155K, CPS at 114K then at 124K.
