Just finished a 5500 mile trip that started with an oil change. Had to add a quart of oil twice, at 2000 and 4000 post oil change.

Is this common? Truck now has 52K on it, a 2003 XLT

She's knocking a bit, especially when the oil level gets low.

I am planning a dealer visit for the 60K service, but looking for some ideas first.

By the way, 15.75 MPG for the total trip, not too bad at all, IMHO

64 Thousand Dollar Question.

What brand and weight oil are you using?

$19.95 answer.

5W-20 and whatever brand the quick lube joint puts in.

My mechanic is suggesting trying a thicker oil like 10W-40.

I'm bringing it to the dealer for the next oil change, will see what they say.

I wouldn't go to heavier oil. If it did work (which I doubt) it would only mask the mechanical problem you have.

Have the shop perform a compression AND a leak down test on it to help find the cause of the oil consumption.
