I just bought a 04 X about a month ago that has bad wander. I e-mailed Landyot about his rods and he is not making any tell 2008. We would like to do some camping this fall, but I dont feel safe pulling the TT. I was hoping someone here may have a good used set for sell. Please let me know.
Thanks

Wandering can also be caused by bad alignment, bad tie rod ends,Drag link, tires out of round, uneven tire pressures, low tire pressures, too much steering play,Ball joints and other assorted odds and ends.
Have you installed a rear sway bar yet?
Keep the Radius Rods on your to do list. They'll do wonders for acceleration and braking!

So much does your trailer weigh?
What is your typical tongue weight?
What brand of WD hitch are you using?
What brand of tire are you using?
How much air do you run in those tires? Towing & non-towing?
How many miles are on the truck?

What make model and size tires you running? I know E code tires at near full psi has the tightest sidewalls.

Try the bar. It certainly helps with the ride but is not known to solve wandering. Wandering is a symptom of the weak(ish) springs that allow rear steering. It can be "cured" with Landyot's Radius Rods or strengthening the existing rear spring packs or replacing the rear spring packs with stronger ones.
It can also be caused by a worn or loose steering gear.
Plus, a WD hitch that isn't set up perfectly can cause wandering issues.
Can you describe what the wandering "feels" like to you and in what towing situation it is the most noticeable?

I have not towed with it yet. My wife and I went on a 400 mile round trip trip to nashville a few weaks ago. On the highway at speed (65-70) it is bad. If I'm driving on a straight place in the road it will track straight as a arrow. It is when I go into or out of a turn. Feels like it is fish tailing. Or very low air in the rear tires. This makes me over steer. The front end dont feel loose at all, no funny wear on the tires. I had a well known front end man drive it and he said it drives very straight and it didnt need anything done to it. That was before our road trip, and I didnt know it is alot worst at faster speed. He only drove it at speeds of around 50 and pretty straight road.
If I change to stiffer springs will that lift the rear higher? I only have less then 1 inch the clear my doorway.
Thanks for all your help.

What you just described is the very reason the rear sway bar is one of those MUST-DO mods. I think you'll feel an improvement once you put yours on.

Like Bill said, you need to take a look at the frontend also. I put a one ton sway bar on mine and traction bar and had little improvement. I got the front up on stands with my daughter at the wheel. I was stunded at what I found. The springs and axel were twisting back and forth as the wheel was turned. It was a quick fix in the driveway on its wheels. First I bought Energy bushing then I put a small jack between the spring and frame to relieve the weight then drilled around the bushing so they about fell out. I did all the spring eyes and, bar and end links. I bought mine with 70,000mi. on it. She has never driven this good. No wander or sway at all. |
