Tried to start the X this morning, it started fine but cut back off. Tried several more times same result. If i held the gas it ran fine, when I let off it cut off. Didn't have much time this morning so when I got back just now I tried again, same result, but as I held the gas I heard a click under the hood and the idle picked up and running fine now. It was running perfect last night after a 500 mile trip, and was driven through some really heavy rain. Could the rain have caused this or maybe a part going bad?

No, your Idle Air Control Valve needs replaced or cleaned. Here's a picture of it.

You can remove it and clean it with carb cleaner. That may work or you can just replace it. (Best option.)

2000 X, V10, 134K miles.
Have had similar problem for about two months now. This will be somewhat drawn out to get all pertinent (I think) info to the forum. Am very frustrated with this problem... javascript:emoticon(' ')
I have not been to dealer shop with this problem (yet), but am at that point now if I can't find a solution quickly. Have been to my regular shop (actually two: Goodyear and NTB) that I have used with all my vehicles for the last seven years (six years with the X). No one could diagnose this problem and no codes have tripped in the PCM. Have looked at several Ford forums, all similarly indicating IACV was issue.
The rest of the story...
Started out very infrequent. Seemed to have some correlation to higher humidity days (fog, rain). Initially, it would recover within a few minutes. Seemed like a cold idle issue. Progressed to about two months ago, it didn't recover for several days. Now, last three weeks or so, it would rarely idle at all, cold or hot. This weekend, I replaced the IACV and reprogrammed the PCM. After resetting PCM, I followed instructions in owner's manual for retraining the computer. During the final step of driving for at least 10 miles, I took it through the paces for acceleration: several miles at 45-55, then 65, then 75-95. Then, I took it through a range of low demand and high demand accelerations and decelerations: 10-15 mph, 20-30, and varying speeds (25-55) to max speed (high demand). The decelerations were proportionate to the accelerations in their aggressiveness. Total drive was about 25 miles for this process.
After reprogramming, normal driving response (city and highway) was very good; actually better than before I started all of this. Idle seemed pretty good with an exception or two. But, first, let's talk idle speed. Interesting enough, I have been to the shop numerous times since I have had the vehicle for routine and some corrective maintenance (AC useless at idle in summer, turning/replacing rotors every 8-10K miles); have even had a tuneup. The idle speed has never been below about 900 rpm since I have had the vehicle. Recently during the problem, it started to recover at 600-700 rpm warm. Found out (from forums) that's where it should have been all along. At least one "good" thing has come out of this. Now, after the reprogram, here is what it idled at (this was last night):
* Idle, no demand: 600-700 rpm
* Idle w/ demand (AC max): 650-725'ish rpm
* Idle w/ more demand (AC max in drive, brake on): 600-700 rpm
This seems okay. However:
* Rev to 1.5K - 2K rpm release to idle sitting still: dropped to 490-500 rpm recovering to 650-725 rpm
* Driving 35 mph then coasting to idle: dropped to 500-550 rpm recovering to 650-725 rpm
RPM drops below 600 rpm also affect voltage output of alternator so lights dim until rpm recovers;this should be occurring I believe since 600 rpm should be around the threshold for minimum alternator output.
I turned in last night fat, dumb, and not quite happy, but willing to live with this. However, this is not a live happily ever after ending...
This morning:
* Won't start without giving it a little gas (first indicator)
* Won't idle cold at 63 degrees
* Drove 15 miles to work (up to 55 mph with several stoplights): 650-725 rpm after the drop below 600 rpm and recover
AAARRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What am I missing here? Hate going to dealer; I think they are a rip off most of the time, especially when you are out of warranty, but my knees are getting weak and I am about to cave on that position for this issue.
There are some really sharp folks out there in these forums. I have high hopes that someone can crack the code on this problem.
Thanx for reading this novel, but I know to diagnose a problem, it helps to have as much detail as possible of the fault indicators.

avncheif, did you reuse the old gasket or replace it with a new one? The IAC typically doesn't come with a new one and must be purchased separately.

You are correct; it did not come with one. In fact, Advance Auto couldn't find a gasket in their computer. I cut one out of a sheet of gasket material using the old one (actually the half that didn't crumble) as a template.

BTW, an update. Cold idle won't stabilize; still dies out. Warm idle works, but not as stable as it should be. Still tries to dip below 600 rpm when you release the accelerator. Recovers most of the time, but occassionally will still drop too low and quit.
Not used to the low rpm (normal) idle. I am used to hearing it idle all the time, so I still have to look at the rpm gauge to make sure it didn't cut off again.
