Last year i put on new front pads and turned the rotors.
Truck sits more then it is driven, less then 3,000 miles since front brakes done.
This summer during our move I noticed pulsing and chatter on the brakes.
Found that the inside of the front rotors had rust markings in the shape of the pads
Last week I put on new Napa rotors. Had a 250 mile trip in the snow and on the way home heard a screech from the braking. Next morning I went out and looked at the rotors, to my disgust they are already rusty in apperance.
Any idea on the cause of this? They are good quality pads from Napa as well, when replaced last winter.
I am very fearful that these new rotors will turn out the same as the last And to the tune of $140 for the pair I am not liking that.
Any ideas?
Change pads to ceramic? Return rotors to Napa and buy a premium rotor to the tune of $130 each!
or just learn to live with it?

Thanks

I know that I've seen slight rusting of the rotors less that 24 hours after washing my vehicles. How much rust build-up are you experiencing?

Rust on Brake Rotors is perfectly normal. If the brakes are working properly, one good hard stop from speed should clean them right off.

If you are seeing rust build up on the back of the rotor that is not getting cleared then your caliper may be frozen and not applying the braking to the back of the rotor enough or at all. That will definitely cause your rotors to warp and wear prematurely.

I would suggest checking that out or having a good brak place check it out to make sure the calipers are all working properly.

BTW, if you have not changed your brake fluid lately, you should do that too. Brake fluid is somewhat hydroscopic and therefore needs to be changed regularly. In fact for my Porsche to be allowed in driver's education events I have to change the brake fluid every year. On your Excursion yyou should probably do it every two years at least. It is cheap insurance to make sure you can stop your 4 tons of truck.
