Put groceries in the back of the truck Thursday with absolutely no problems. Went to use the truck this morning and the top part of the tailgate almost killed me. Will not stay up at all. Not sure how this can happen overnight but it did.

Questions...

Is there an adjustment?

Is this something a non-mechanical type can fix himself?

If yes, any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Willie

Replace the pair of struts which hold the liftgate up. If one sprung a leak, the other cannot hold the gate up by itself. And while you're at it, get the struts made for the 2WD model because they will hold the liftgate higher than those made for the 4WD model. Most any auto parts store keep 'em in stock.

And BTW, WELCOME to the X-Files!

No.

Yes.

Go to the dealership and ask for hatch struts for a 2WD excursion. It will be a little longer than the 4WD version. At the end are metal clips. WGAS about what you have there. Take a small screwdriver and pry them out ONE SIDE AT A TIME. Change strut. Repeat on the other side.

You're welcome

Thank you all for the information. I'll call my local dealer first thing tomorrow morning.

Good instructions. Let me add that you may want to hold a rag over the clip while prying it off in the event it wants to go flying ... and wear eye protection in case you don't capture it sufficiently with the rag.

He could catch it with his eye or his teeth if he is good enough.
