I have an 03 Limited X with the 7.3L PSD. While using it for daily kid hauling I travel several times of year to the high country of Colorado as well as Utah for photography work. While in these areas I'm on old mining and 4x4 trails which always put a beating on the ball joints. I've already replaced the ball joints once last summer at ~65K miles and after last fall of trail driving I'm already seeing some indications that the ball joints have suffered.
I know that the ball joint design is a weak point in the front suspension of the X but I was wondering if there is any type of solution to beefing up/swapping the front suspension in some way to reduce the maintenance interval? I've always loved using my X for these travels because I can haul everything and everyone I need and it is very sure footed (albeit a very long wheelbase). I'd like to modify it further to make it more expedition ready (roof top tent, external spare carrier, water and fuel cans, etc.) but before doing so I need to find some means of upgrading this area of weakness.
I'm open to aftermarket solutions, full swaps, etc. so let me know if you have any insights or companies providing solutions that I can explore further. Thanks!
Mark

I put Moog ball joints on my truck about 40k ago and they are still tight, but I do keep them well greased with Mobil 1 synthetic grease. Every oil change (5000 miles) I rotate tires and grease the front end, so far so good.
Good Luck,
Chris
I'd rather be in the boat with a drink on the rocks then in the drink with the boat on the rocks.... But either way theres gonna be a good story!!! |
