Just bought a 2001 Excursion with the 7.3, awesome truck so far! Looking to tow 12-14k lbs and researched forums so far for the following mods:

Landyot Radius Rods
Hellwig Rear Sway Bar
Superchips programmer
Rear airbag system
Distribution hitch
AFE Stage 2 Intake
Walker Muffler Turbo

Now looking into lifting just a tad for a little more aggressive stance and bigger tires, but dont wanna go sky high and lose towing capability.

What size lift do you recommend for fitting 315/75/16 tires? X will see little to none real offroad stuff (just toting jeeps to parks) so off road rubbing wont be an issue. Im currently looking at 2.5" leveling kit and the new BFG KM2's.

Also any other mod suggestions very much appreciated.

Good truck!

But...be careful with the chip. Your tranny wasn't rated for the extra-hp and some on this board have destroyed their tranny after getting the chip.

So if you have a lot of miles on that tranny you may want to think of upgrading it or not putting the chip in at all.

Good luck and keep us updated.

A friend of mine has an 01 X with 35'' tires and he is towing a 39' Formula boat which i think is about a 15K setup. He had to go to 4.30 gears with the larger tires to tow at that weight. He has the superchip but is not that happy with it. The DP Tuner 16 position chip gets the best reviews from 7.3 guys on many different Forums. I did the Fcode rear springs and added one leaf out of the old spring pack for 2.5" lift in the rear. This was an idea from another member of this Forum (Towrig). My friend that tows the big Formula installed add a leafs only in the back and says it works fine. He did F350 springs from a gas powered snow plow truck and got a 2" lift in the front. I dont know what the factory codes are for those. I did the V code springs and got about 1.5" in the front. He says my X rides better. He fits the 35" tires and it looks great. He did have to do 1/4" spacers in the front to reduce rubbing on the front springs. As the the other guys have said, you should do some trans upgrades, at the very least a bigger trans cooler. Guages should be at the top of your list also. Another trouble spot when towing big weight will be the brakes. A properly set up trailer with good brakes of its own will help but the Excursion brakes fade quicky when leaned on too hard.
Just be warned, once you start tinkering with these trucks it becomes addictive. $$$$$$
