I have a 2001 PSD Excursion Limited 2WD with 128,000 miles on it. I've had it in to an independent diesel shop here twice in the past two months. The first time my complaint was a "rumbling idle". I noticed it the most with my foot on the brake at a stoplight. It just idled rough, and it was very noticeable... even my friends noticed it. The diesel shop owner diagnosed it (on the receipt) as: "perform diesel diag, found #3 cyl low on cyl balance". He said the #3 fuel injector was bad and needed to be replaced. The bill for that was $458 in parts and $343 in labor. At the time, I asked him what the likelihood of seven more of these going out was... He said "Very unlikely. The 7.3 is a very reliable engine."

That was June 3rd, and the engine ran great until about July 25th. Then it started doing the same thing again. I took it back to the same shop, and he diagnosed the same problem, this time with #4. I can't believe I am going to be in for $5,600 replacing all 8 fuel injectors to keep this thing running....

Do you guys think I am getting screwed by my mechanic? Should I trade in the Ex to a dealer and run away from the problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Or any interest in buying it, before or after I get it fixed.

Couple other notes: I've had it since 2005, when it had about 75k miles. I have always changed the oil at 5-6k miles and taken good care of it. It has new tires, an Edge programmer (always set to level 1), a rear anti-sway bar, Rancho 9000 shocks, and a new stereo/speakers.

Thanks,
Curtis

The 7.3L PSD is a very reliable engine.

If you are having alll these injector issues, make sure the mechanic does some other things, like check the fuel filter (obvious) and possible check the fuel tank and fuel pump.

If any kind of partulates or algae or anything in the fuel could be clogging the injectors. It is also possible a seal is failing somewhewre letting bits of disintegrating rubber through.

As an FYI, I just installed a High Pressure Oil Crossover kit (HPX) and a fuel crossover kit in mine and it quiets the engine considerably and gives a nce boost in modrange throttle response an performance.

Good luck with it but stick with it. That really is a great engine!
