Has anyone seen those hho generator kits that everyone is talking about? A girl at my wifes office bought one for her p.o.s. saturn. She said it is suppose to get up to 30% better mileage. If anyone has had any luck with these I would love to know abojut it. Any improvement I could get out of my Excursion would be great.

They are a complete ripoff.

The amount of energy it takes to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen is greater than the energy you get back by burning it.

The people exploiting these are banking that the people buying them won't remember their high school chemistry and physics.

Dave the plans for these things are about $100. They are not complex in theory but the plans are a pain in the arse. It runs off the battery current which I suppose could put an extra load on the alternator but I don't think that would be an issue. One company--the original guy's in Florida, is hoping to have a pre-made kit ready before the end of the year. The top of the line setup allows you to tune your engine for optimum performance by adjusting the amount of HOH going into the intake. Seems to me this would be more workable than some of those electric assisted cars produced as your power consumption is much less and could be used throughout the RPM range. Electrics disengage at highway speeds so their help is minimal on the road.

Doesn't hydrogen make metal parts brittle? (Hydrogen embrittlement?)

That much I dont. These systems are not true hydrogen gas systems. They convert water to HHO which is suppose to be safer. I have seen this gas power torch welders, so I know it burns. I am always hesitant with things like this. I want to see one in person in use. I love my truck too much to blow it up with something funky.

Hey Dave, I agree that if you paid any money for a kit or plans it would be a ripoff. In 1995 I bought a couple BIG units for my 425hp Cat engines. Truely amazing what they will do for a gas or diesel engine. Last year I started fooling around in my shop with my ideas and turned three good working units. The biggest obstile is regulation. As they run from a cold start the amperage will rise and you have to control this before the chernoble effect takes over. This can be done with a pulse width modulator. As far a amperage draw goes, If your hydropac is pulling 30amps, it needs to have the power turned down. The systems I've seen for sale are hardly big enough for a 2.0 engine. Build big for a diesel, they flow twice the air of a gasser. End result, I picked up 2mpg with my system and thats about the same as BIO diesel but the fuel part is much cheaper. Bill

Well 60 Minutes just ripped the guy who markets these things a new one. They had one installed undercover on an Accord which is supposed to show the biggest improvement. After installation, the guys at Popular Mechanics checked it. It got worse gas mileage than before and when it was turned off, it got better mileage. LOL!!

Hello all,

I'm new here. I just read a possible excerpt from Popular Mechanics website in reference to David Rush's post above. It's located at: http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/how_to/4310717.html?series=19.

My wife and I just bought a 2000 XLT to pull our 28 foot travel trailer. While my buddy has an F-250, we are learning more about the "X" everyday, thanks to this site. Thanks, everyone.

Wes
