Hello everyone, I live close to the ocean an am able to drive on the beach. The truck has stock tires on it, and the sand gets pretty soft in spots from all the activity. Do these trucks (being so heavy) perform well under these circumstances? I am picking up my truck (2005 Excursion) next week and would love to take the family out on the sand, and be able to make it back.
Thanks for all your help.
Joe

We take ours up Carova Beach in North Carolina every year. I have 285/75/16 tires which are a bit bigger than stock but I never feel very secure on the sand in my Excursion. The really loose sand is a problem for these heavy trucks even with the tires aired down. The wet sand near the water is easy for everybody including the "Crossovers" . The bigger and wider the tires the better for any vehicle on the sand.
If you take it out on the beach be sure to keep your momentum up on the loose stuff!
Good luck!

I haven't kept up with the news, but it seems I've heard that more and more of driving on the OBX sand is being outlawed. I think one person said you cannot drive on the beach at Oregon Inlet anymore. Is that true?

Joe... I've been a PE teacher for over 20 years and I can say without a doubt, "diving" on sand can be very bad for your health.... especially your neck.

Sorry.... I couldn't resist.

We had heard the same thing about the Carova beach area as well. A petition was put together to limit the out of town traffic up the beach for 2008 but the local authorities decided to keep the beach public for now (according to a local newspaper). It may eventually be shut down because of too much traffic. Probably the same thing is going on the Southern area of the Outer Banks.
