Folks,
Yesterday while I was on a flight from DFW to Atlanta my better half Kathy had a mishap. On her way to a doctor's office, while driving down our rock road, a deer suddenly jumped out into the roadway in front of her. She flinched and got into a speed-wobble, our Excursion swapped ends, went off the road hit a tree and rolled up onto the driver's side and roof. Dazed but not seriously injured, the beast having protected her ( ), she crawled out the driver's side window (which was now the roof) and because we live surrounded by US Forest Service property northeast of Dallas and cell phone coverage is spotty at best, she had to walk 1 1/4 mile home to start calling for assistance. She got the sheriff's department out, a wrecker service, and everybody pitched in and took care of her needs. I got home eight hours later to attend to her. She refused medical assistance and is OK other than being bruised, sore and suffering from a mild concussion. The headache from the concussion is nothing compared to her anguish over grievously hurting her baby. The wrecker operator told her he thought it might be a total loss. Today the insurance confirmed that fact. What we had:
2002 Ford Excursion Limited Ulimate
4x4 7.3L and all the goodies (including adjustable pedals)
Landyot radius arms and other stability mods
~110,000 miles
I am considering buying the wreck from the insurance company for future parts and am now actively looking for a clean replacement. I have a number of them around the country scoped out, but if anybody here can no longer afford to fuel theirs or has any other issue that is forcing them to sell, or if they know anybody else in that position; please drop me a PM and share the details of what you can offer.
I am now looking for a very clean (and miles |

Ouch! Glad to hear the Mrs. came out OK.
I suspect it was totaled due to recent declining values. May have been spared otherwise. If it were me, I'd be tempted to buy it back and have it repaired myself. |

Yes, indeed I'm blessed she came out OK. Her mild concussion seems to have cleared up because the splitting headache went away late last night. With respect to your other comments - I agree with your assessment on the insurance company decision. We're doing half of what you suggest - we're going to buy the wreck and keep it for spare parts. We will spend the "fix" money to instead buy another one to drive into infinity. And we'll have a perfectly good engine, transmission and lots of other goodies to keep it in good form. I still haven't seen the wreck, but if our radius arms can't be salvaged to put on the new Excursion I'll be in touch shortly. Here's another question for any readers that would know - we prefer our Excursion's middle row bench seat because we leave it folded down most of the time in order to haul our dogs. Many of the Excursions I am looking at have the captain seats in the middle row. Can I just unbolt those captain seats and put our bench seat there? Is it a simple unbolt/bolt in proposition? Thanks again for the remark about my Sweetie. I'll keep everybody informed as we move forward. Phil |
