ok suspension is pretty worn out on the ex and i am getting estimates on what to do
i do not like the way this truck has always rolled a lot, so i am looking into heavier /aftermarket setups to make it "tighter"
this is an 01 powerstroke with 135,000 miles, air bags and radius rods, 4wd
here is what one shop wants to do, any input would be appreciated
dual shocks on front
dual steering stabilizers
new leaf springs
a couple of ball joints need replacing
first estimate 2700.00
they will use bilstein shocks and pretty heavy duty stuff
second estimate 3400.00
they will use bilstein icon shocks? and even heavier stuff
has anyone done some of these mods to their trucks and what did you think |

I put on the Front and Rear Hellwig Sway bars and Billstein Shick in addition to my Radius Rods and I love the handling now.
I would try that before you stiffen anything further.
I have a 2002 Excursion with the 7.3 L PSD

can anyone explain to me the differences in the codes on the springs for the ex
reading thru some of the older post on suspensions i see there are different codes
at this point i am not doing springs in the backend, i guess the air bags are handling that end ok
but they say the front springs have no or very little travel before they bottom out on the stops , so they need replacing |

Hey! You're here too! V/B
V code springs are higher rate springs. Stock springs for your truck are D-code. They have a a 4700lbs capacity and a very small amount of travel (as you already know). And FYI, ALL Excursion have about .75" of front travel to the bumpstop.
V codes are a 5200lb capacity spring. They will give you a 1.5" (approx) lift on the front end.
Air bags may compensate for the rear to level it out but airbags don't replace a weak spring pack (IMO). They should be used to level the load. You can strengthen your spring pack out back as well compensate for the additional lift up front by either adding an add-a-leaf. I used the spring that comes in the 6" lift kit for F-250 Super Duty. It is now the new #3 leaf. The pair will set you back about $50-75 bucks.
You can also replace the entire spring pack with the spring pack from an F-250 (sans overload springs). Those are referred to as B-codes (talking about rear springs).
However, until you fix the worn parts you really shouldn't move forward with major suspension mods. You have a nice set-up out back for towing. Get it right mechanically then if you still need to tighten it up move on to the mods.
