Any one got any opinions or coments it would be great to help me make up my mind here, 2001 5.4 and it has 85000 miles on it and asking price of 11.500.i drove it yesterday and was surpised at how much you could feel the bumps in the road, i am sure it has the original shocks on it., the 5.4 has lots of power i thought, i love the space inside thou dam it is big!!!!!!, any coments would be great, i am thinking for MPG maybe 18 or so on the HWY i am easy on the peadal and maybe 12-14 in the city, do you guys think that is posible ??

Hey James

The general consensus around here is to stay away from the 5.4 engine. It is quite underpowered for a 7000 lb vehicle. The gas mileage I hear is worse than the V-10 which I have since the 5.4 has to rev so high. I get about 10-11 around town and about 14-16 on the road. I imagine the transmission would be subject to wearing out more quickly due to the gear hopping thats going on.

Hope that helps

FWIW, the revs on the 5.4L won't be any different than those on either 6.8L or the 7.3L if all are run through the standard 3.73 rear end since they all use the same transmission.

What the 5.4L has going for it is the availability of 4.10s and 350lb ft @ a lowish (for gas) 2500 RPM. That is very close to what the V10 makes at that RPM.

I would imagine the 5.4L could be a good powerplant if you aren't towing heavy. However, I've never driven one in the Excursion. It would have to have 4.10's for me to consider it.

BTW, diseldust, you'll NEVER get those MPG numbers and the price is absolutely ridiculous!!!!
