Wife is complaining that the backup lights are not bright enough, and I'm not adding external lights and wires and cables etc...

Have not tried LED but I did add the White Knight light kit. Easy to install and has a three way switch.

LEDs are not as bright/powerful. I think you might be disappointed with them. They just aren't designed for projecting lots of light.
The White Night is da freakin' bomb!

You are correct, I think they're dimmer than the standard bulbs.
