I just picked up an '02 Excursion Ltd PSD the other day. I have followed the sound advice of many posts on this site and removed the OEM luggage rack crossbars.
I have a Yakima Rocket Box that fit very well on the OEM rack on my '98 Expedition, but to get it to fit on the X it seems I need to buy Yakima towers and crossbars that are well over $300.
Anybody know if there are there any other options?
Much thanks... |

I modified [ widened ] two sets of Ford Explorer crossbars (pix here http://www.supermotors.net/registry/media/231431) to have them clear the roof's sheet metal. You could get a pair to fabricate a mount for your Yakima box. I believe I had to widen the Explorer crossbars by 2-9/16" for them to fit the Excursion's roof rails. I got the Explorer crossbars at eBay ... and I also sold my Excursion crossbars there.
PS - WELCOME to the X-Files. |

Thanks for the good info. Those look a lot like Expedition crossbars, since I still have my Expedition I am going to see if they might work too. |

Like the Explorer, the Expedition's towers will fit the Excursion's roof rails, but the Expedition crossbars are about the same width as the Explorer. |

I forgot to mention one aspect of using the Explorer or Expedition crossbar towers on the Excursion's roof rails; You might be able to insert one of the towers into the aft end of a rail, but you WILL need to disassemble the rail in order to remove that tower. I would remove the three most-rearward Torx screws, remove the rear pointy-shaped end, and raise the rail slightly using a wooden shim like those used for installing windows & door frames. |

Thanks again, this is all good stuff. Mind if I ask exactly how you widened the crossbars? |

I made 8 inserts to extend each end of each crossbar tube where it fits into each tower. Was WAY too much work. If I were to do it again, I'd sacrifice one aluminum crossbar tube to be cut & TIG welded to the others. |
