I'm looking at getting a 2003 or 2000 excursion. They are pretty much loaded exactly the same with the 2003 obviously costing more. The only differences that I can tell are the power adjustable pedals. However, on edmunds it says there was suspension upgrades in 2003 and later models. Are the changes worth the extra cost of upgrading?

You don't say if you're looking at diesel or gas. You have correctly identified the major amenity difference, adjustable pedals, which was not available until a late model year 2001 production upgrade. 2002 is the last year the 7.3PSD was put in them, and the 6.0 in 2003 and on Excursions were noted to have a lot of issues.

They are both V10 gas excursions. The 2000 was a soccer mom car anb being sold by a private individual. The 2003 was a rental for 1 year then owned by two other people and being sold by a dealer. There is a 4K difference in price. Is going to the 2003 worth the upgrade?

Other than the possibility of having a rear anti-swaybar, there are no suspension differences between 2000 and 2003 models. There were some minor changes in the rear suspension for the '04 and '05 models, but nothing noteworthy.

What you need to research is when Ford started installing upgraded transmissions. Sorry, but I don't remember when that was. I do know the 2000 has the old style transmission which can be a costly repair ... enough to offset a $4K price difference. I got rid of my 2001 V10 the moment the transmission started to act slightly different than normal. I was going to buy a used 2005 anyway, and the tranny problem moved up my scheduled purchase date by only three months.

Can you talk the 2003 seller down some? Good luck!

The suspension change in 03 was the front bump stops. They were redesigned to smooth out the transition when the spring pack contacted the bump stop.

There were only two transmission "upgrades".

1. Obviously was the new 5R110 (Torqshift) that sits behind the 6.0L that was instroduced on 03.

2. The other is the second half of 01 diesel models only has a mechanical diode in the tranny that when it fails means a rebuilt tranny is the owner's future. It was removed for 02's and beyond.

Otherwise the 4R100 received no notable changes throughout the 5 model years and especially for the V10.

You didn't mention the miles on each one. For me, I'd strongly consider with the 2000 simply because you know the history better. But condition and mileage are big factors.

Diesel models only? Huh! I thought it was all of 'em. If it wasn't all of them, then why haven't later models had the same transmissions problems?
