Check the hose to the PCV. It can crack at the elbow and set a lean code.

If the air-fuel mixture is becoming lean, then the fuel flow must not be up to snuff. When's the last time you changed the fuel filter? And that reminds me that I need to change mine.

Computer controlled engines we will usually only run lean if there is an unmetered air leak or a faulty sensor. A plugged up fuel filter will crreate driveabilty issues but the PCM will adjust to mixture.

Yes, I agree, but the PCM can only adjust for so much. Each sensor in today's engines has an operating range in which it can provide readings to the PCM. Even the PCM will only accept readings within certain ranges. Go outside the allowable ranges ... go byond the ranges calculated by the design engineers (usually due to a mechanical problem) ... and the PCM cannot adjust, and though it should go into "limp mode," it may sometimes throw some codes unrelated to the source of the problem.

A vacuum leak is indeed a possibility. Another reason I tossed out the fuel filter idea is because that's an item frequently forgotten, and could be an issue on a higher mileage engine. I had forgotten mine, and this thread reminded me that I should change mine.
