My wife (Lady Packsalot--She's really knighted that) and i were looking for something we could put both kids in, the dogs, and us, and HER STUFF in and go overnight somewhere. The Caddy i had was a little tight with just us and the kids, and my F-150 SuperCrew didn't have quite the inside room i would have liked. We looked at Expeditions, Navigators, and 1 Excursion. I drove it, and we ended up with it.
It is white, and now called Moby Truck (the White Road Whale...) We will be taking delivery of it sometime this week from a dealer. I am bringing my code reader to check it before i sign the papers, and am going to go over it as well as i can. I will check the bearings/balljoints when i get it home as well.
I have a few questions:
What else (besides the doorlocks and back up sensors) should i look for??
Are there any typical rustpoints?? (My SUpercrew's Rockers kinda vanished over the last few years, and that's why it went away.
I have read a few posts about transmissions, are they an issue, or just an occasional thing with these??
What else do i need to know about it??
It seems that people get between 10 and 16ish mpg with them, is that typical??
Thanks VERY much!!!

How about some more info on the X?

Year, model, motor, miles, geographic region of previous ownership, mods... info is most important when requesting what you have requested.

BTW... Door locks and backup sensors would be the least of my worries.

Moby Truck is a 2001 V10 Limited. She has 77k miles on her. The truck seems to be fairly stock; i am going to add some storage in the back (some sort of low profile box for tools and recovery gear), a front hitch mount for my winch, maybe a chip programmer and a cold air intake. She was a Northeast truck for most of her life, exc. for a short stint on the Baltimore area. I looked at the rockers an underside, and didn't see any rust. The carfax report comes back clean as well. I have a lot of Ford experience (i build old Broncos for fun...probably because i have rocks in my head), and a bit with the new 5.4 motors and their drivetrains, but none with the V-10. I read a lot of posts on a several sites, and didn't seem to find anything bad about the motors, but there were a few transmission issues.
thanks VERY much!!!

I have the same exact truck. The engine and tranny are stock with over 200k. I should note I only use synthetic lubes and have never deviated from the 5/20 blend for motor oil, maybe that has something to do with it.
My only issue has been with burning coils. Ive replaced coils twice now.
At 200k the truck really started handling poorly almost scary to drive. This week I replaced the rear springs with v codes from an f250 donor, the difference is astounding and I should have done it years ago! Im waiting for the front springs to come in so I can replace them.

I've read that early V-10s had an issue with spitting plugs due to a lack of plug threads in the early V-10 heads... I'm unsure of when FoMoCo changed the head design (added more plug threads), but I'm sure someone (Monsta) knows. Same thing with exhaust manifold bolt breakage... I had an early 99 F250-SD with a 5.4 that broke off a few bolts and have heard the same about early V10s... Once again, I'm unsure when FoMoCo changed the specs.

I'd be concerned with the lock-out hubs (I'm thinking you have a 4X4 since the truck is from the NE) and their operation (the auto ESOF- Electronic shift on the fly).

Brakes... check to see that all the caliper slide-pins are free and not seized up... as well as checking the rotors and pads.

With 77K miles, I'd check out the ball joints too... My 99F250 went 60K before I replaced them (the Fisher plow had something to do with it too) and my X has a squeeky p-side ball joint now... it has 62K miles. (next on the agenda)

Thank you both--it's really nice to have my eyes open going into this. I am going to check the brakes, ball joints, the wiper motor, lube the door switches, rear defrost, and the back up sensor--these are the things i have read about being problematic so its a place to start. I am also going to plug my code reader into it so i can see if anything has been purged, or if it has had a lot of issues.
thanks again,

I am going to look at a 2000 Ford Excursion today. The pictures look pretty good.

One thing that concerns me - it has spent most of it's life in Omaha, NE. Do they use salt up there?
