I have a 2002 X PSD, 4X4 and there are times I need to leave the rear hatch open but want to turn off all those interior and running board lights. I know they will automatically shut off but that takes 20 minutes. Any suggestions?
Mike

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the quick reply. When I go to the site you referred to all I get is a blank page. Am I missing something?
BTW, I installed the headlight switch from a 2003 Expediton in place of the stock X switch [they look identical except that the little roller switch also has a click stop on the bottom to shut off all lights. Only, it doesn't shut off my lights. It comes with one additional pin though. I plan on having Ford look into that for me.

It worked for me! I don't know why it doesn't work for you. Here...
What you'll need.
1. A 12VDC 30AMP backlit (optional) switch available from Radio Shack.
2. Some quick-splices. I cannot remember the true name.
3. About 3' of 16ga wire. 3 colors if you can.
4. Necessary connectors to attach the wires to the switch and one wire to ground.
5. 10mm socket and wrench.
Disconnect the battery first!
1. Remove the fuse panel access door below the steering wheel.
2. Locate the fuse box.
3. Put your hand underneath and behind the fuse box.
4. You will find two large "connectors" that are held on by recessed 10mm bolts .
5. You want the one that is facing the OUTSIDE OF THE TRUCK. Or the outboard one. (left one as you are looking at the fuse box.)
5. Remove the 10mm bolt.
6. This will free the connector. It is white on the bottom and comes out when the bolt is removed.
7. Remove the black cover on the connector via 4 clips.
8. Locate pin #33. They are labelled. As you are looking at the inside of the connector, it is on the right side about the 4th one up.
9. It is a Black/Light Blue wire.
10. Take your quick splices and put them onto the wire as far UP the wire as you can. (I had to remove some electrical tape.) Do NOT clamp them down yet.
11. Attach the wire that is coming from the POWER side of the switch to the part of the wire that is coming FROM the connector. Or the splice closest to the connector.
12. Clamp the splice down securely.
13. Do the same for the other wire. This wire will be LOAD from the switch going TO the lights.
14. Clamp down securely.
>Here's where you cut the stock wire between the two splices.< It's okay... really...
15. Re-install cover.
16. Re-install bolt.
17. Ground switch on one of the bolts you'll see when you removed the panel.
18. Hook up battery.
When the doors are opened the switch will light up. When you hit the switch to turn them off, the switch light will go out.
All lights can be controlled individually still, as stated above.
If you want to be able to over-ride your running boards, then do the same splice job to pin #20. It is also a BLK/LB wire.

Now about that extra pin, if you figure out how to use that pin that would save many of us a lot of headaches with this mod. (Although it is not too difficult)

After you cut the wires between the two splices then...

Okay...after doing this mod I realized that the switch that I used may be overkill. You probably do not need such a large switch. Not a lot of amps/voltage moves through it. You probably do not need one that it lighted either.
I did not do my running boards.
1. I did not have them installed when I did the mod. I had my Westin tube steps on.
2. I realized that if I need to keep the lights from bothering someone then it must be dark out. Darkness + a kid getting out of a big (to him/her) truck and not being able to see the running boards may = a trip to the doctor's office.

Hey Ken,
Thanks again for the info. I added the new info to my file. As I don't plan on having the lights off at night the unlit running boards won't be a problem. I do volunteer work with the U.S. Forestry Service doing graffiti removal with a high temp, high pressure [plus sand] water blaster. Since I have the largest truck,I pull the trailer. We move only 50 to 100 feet at a time and people are in and out of the X all day long so the lights get triggered quite frequently. I don't want the batteries to run down.
