Hi,
What is a good service manual to purchase for servicing a 2002 Ford Excursion? She's ready for her 30 k. service and the dealer want's over $900 ,
they just soaked me for over $200 a few weeks ago for the 25k.
Here are some of the tasks:
tranny fluid and filter replace
crank case filter replace(if applicable)
coolant system flush
PCV valve replace
fuel filter replace
fuel injector service
scope check engine
maintenance reminder indicator reset

Which engine?
Are you handy?
There is a simple process for the tranny fluid posted in the Tech Article section over at www.ford-trucks.com.
The other stuff is quite simple. I here that Haynes or Chilton just came out with one. They should cover the simple stuff listed above.
Plus, you can ask here and many of us can either direct you or write up a quick tech article for you to do it yourself.
I'm not sure what some of that stuff is...
eg.,
fuel injector service
scope check engine
maintenance reminder indicator reset

Thanks ken,
2002 7.3 liter power stroke turbo diesel.
Yes I can work on trucks, with some reference.
I'd like to save money, I just don't want to miss anything!
I will check out the tech section and look at one of those manuals.
You guy's are great, I know now that I can get into this service and get fast advice if I get hung up.
thanks again!
ps.
By the way, she's been a great truck for me. 15 months old, 28k miles already!
The 8 hour trips(1 tank of fuel) each way, from San Jose Ca. to Las Vegas are a breeze! |

Some of the easy DIY that you can do at home for the 30K:
fuel filter- Make sure you get a racor, they build them for motorcraft. If you are wanting to get it locally check out : http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/autotrans.htm
The cooling system flush can either be done now and just make sure you get the correct coolant approved for diesel or get your fleetgard test strip and check its contents, it may just need a fw-16 recharge.
Tranny fluid replacement is a much longer process. This is a time to see whether you want a new pan like the PML that another forum member posted (gearman) to be installed. Might as well if you are getting the fluid changed anyways. The other thought is if you want to use synthetics like mobil 1, in which case, you could buy the fluids yourself, it is a bit more expensive than regular tranny fluid, and talk to a tranny shop that has the columm exchange system where they run new fluid in and extract old ones out without dropping the pan. Usually a regular service including fluids runns about 125.00 in the neighborhood, they may charge you machine labor charge ~50-60 bucks and your fluid on this.

Can anyone tell me if I have to drop the pan to change the auto tranny fluid, and if there is a tranny filter??
I have looked at the drain pan and it looks like i can just drain the fluid using the drain plug on the bottom of the tranny pan.
The scheduled maintenance guide and the diesl guide supplement do not say anything about a filter in the tranny, but I am sure there is one right??? |
