My question is. Why are both the Super Duty trucks & Excursions equipped with locking hubs? When placed in the auto position you're able to engage the 4WD by simply switching it to either 4HI or 4LO by turning the dash mounted switch. So are the hubs for more reassurance that your front axle is in fact 'locked" in four wheel drive? Like the older systems, where you had to lock your hubs and then either engage a lever or push a button to get into 4HI or 4LO. |

When the hubs are in Auto postion this allows the vacuum system to 'pull' and lock the hub.
The dash switch not only locks in the Transfer case, it also activates a vacuum pump to engage the hubs,,,,
If they are not locking in, then I would be checking into that part of the system.
Mine is like this, still need to find out what part is wrong, I think i packed too much grease into it and have blockage. Mine will engage initially, but after a minute or so unlock themselves |

My 4WD system is working just fine, I was just wondering why they [Super Duty & Excursions] were equipped with both Auto 4WD & having to lock the hubs. Like I mentioned in my question, I believe the hubs are so that the axle is in fact locked instead of relying on the vacuum process.I also periodically rotate the hubs to the lock position[leaving the switch in 2HI] to lubricate the transfer & front axle. Especially if I haven't used the 4WD that much. Thanks for the reply, I hope your 4WD system works out. Take care. |
