About 4 months ago I bought a 2000 Excursion to cart around my active and growing 10-year old triplets, their friends and all their stuff. I love the cargo space and comfort in which all my passengers travel.
When I purchased the vehicle, my father, who was with me, noticed that the front tires were worn on the outer edges. He asked the dealer to replace the tires and check the front end for alignment and suspension problems. They did replace the tires but assured us that the vehicle had just passed an inspection during which they checked the front end.
Now, just 4 months later, my front left tire has worn in the exact same pattern. I’ve taken my Excursion back to the dealer who tells me that the problem is with the radius arm bushing. Of course, they wanted to charge me the warranty deductible and cost to replace the tire. I’ve almost successfully argued against my liability based on the following: the problem existed prior to my purchasing the vehicle (as indicated by the wear on the original tires); that we had asked them to check out the front end suspension prior to acceptance of the vehicle; that they assured us there was no problem with it; and that they’d said they’d take care of it if a problem arose. By almost, I mean that they are waiving the warranty deductible, labor and are giving the tire to me at their cost. I want to dispute their explanation that this is a common problem with Excursions, but I need to understand what other Excursion owners have experienced.
My questions to you all are…Do these radius arm bushings go out that quickly? Is this camber-angle wear pattern typical of a problem with the radius arm bushing? And, is this a frequent and common problem with Excursions?
I hate feeling like I’m being taken advantage of because I am a woman who doesn’t know much about cars. Please help educate me on this matter.
Thanks!

You must have a 2WD model because this is not a part of the 4WD's front suspension. As to whether or not it's a common problem among 2WD models, I do not know ... I merely wanted to point out that the commonality question needs to be addressed to and by 2WD owners. |

I have a 2WD and I may be able to help you when I get mine checked. I've got wear on the outer edges. Mine has 124K and I wouldn't be shocked if they were not worn--who knows how much. How many miles to you have on yours? I'll post back if I find out anything. |
