Hey guys--I have a 01 2WD v10 X with 123K on her. A couple of months ago, I noticed early in the am in particular a strange bump in the steering. Almost felt like turning something round and then finding a flat spot. I can faintly hear what I would describe as a sound of like the steering wheel itself burning against a rubber area or something. The noise coincides with the wheel position as I turn the wheel position and feel that dull kind of thud...not a big thud . I don't really notice it later very much but have felt it later in the day. There is no lift on the X and has Std size tires. Any ideas??? Thanks!

While I was reading your post, I was envisioning having to pull the steering wheel to access the electrical parts which allow all the buttons on the steering wheel to function. But when you mentioned no lift and standard tires, I started to think that this "flat spot" is outside the passenger cabin. Have you checked the first things, like ball joints and tie-rod ends? How about the steering damper? |

Hey Ken--I'm not a front end guy. I just had the front end aligned as it's about time for new tires. The left front was wearing more to the outside. I told them to check out everything(them=dealer) and they reported nothing. Ball joints went through my mind but I thought they had more of a popping sound to them. Tie rod ends did cross my mind. I didn't know there was a steering stabilizer on 2WD...what does it look like. I know what the 4WD version looks like. Thanks for the help! |
