Need a little help. While driving yesterday my beautifull Excursion developed a rough idle and then a miss fire. The miss fire was bad enough to trip the check engine light. As we drove home it got worse. Today I changed the spark plugs (been awhile since they were done) and found two spark plugs covered in fresh oil. The oil was not on the electrode or the tip, but was covering the threads and most of the body. The spark plug boot was also dry, no oil pressent. After replacing the plugs and reseting the check engine light I took her for a drive. She drives flawlessly again. What has me troubled is the oil. Has anyone had this problem?? Do the valve covers leak into the spark plug wells?? She runs to good to be a bad piston ring or a dropped valve. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Right now my Excursion has 135,500 flawless miles. She burns no oil, never any issues with miss fires untill now.

I have not experienced this problem, but I have another thought since you said there was no evidence of oil on the outside. Some early V10 engines were known to spit out a few plugs. If you're not the original owner, perhaps these two plug holes were repaired at some time in history. Hopefully, they were not repaired using Helicoil inserts ... which should never be used in aluminum. The best thread repair for a cast aluminum part is a Timesert. If Helicoils were used, it would be easy for the gas/oil mix to work it's way up around the threads ... mostly because torquing Helicoils in aluminum causes them to distort or twist ... which in turn, distorts the aluminum threads.

EDIT TO ADD: When Timeserts were not available, I have had some threaded rod bored and tapped to make my own inserts.

Thought of that idea already. My problem is that the amount of oil that was pressent on the spark plug and in the hole looked like it had been poured into it. The electrode portion of the spark plug was clean. ANd to have this much oil getting around the threaded portion of the plug would shurely cause some smoking. I have not had a chance to check the plugs since replacing them but I am planning on doing that this weekend.

I'm wondering if those 2 plugs were working loose? I would think twice before pulling the plugs since these guys tend to blow out plugs. I'd check oil consumption and running in general for 3k and see what you get.
