i had the tires on my x balanced and rotated 2 weeks before i was to take a 13 hour drive for vacation. didnt really drive it much before i left but noticed that a vibration occured at 65, which smoothed out out 70 so i thought no big deal. well i was wrong , truck started skaking at all speeds pretty much the whole trip. 55,65,75, and terrible at 80. 85 was the best speed and that was what traffic was traveling mostly.it was shaking so bad that full drinks in the drink holder would spill. the tires are uniroyal laredo at factory size. running 47 pounds in them, they have about 70 % tread left and dont appear to be wearing bad. had allignment checked a month ago and tech said it was just slightly out in steering but not enough to cause excessive tire wear or be noticeable so he left it alone. any ideas anybody is this a tire issue or drivetrain. it seemed to be the worst when i let off accereator or set cruise. if accerating it was fine but if i back off to settle in, the shaking started.

brake rotars vibrate during brakeing as well. i know from previos post theis is a common problem. could warped rotors cause vibration at highway speed.

Have you adjusted tire pressure?

Checked ball joints?

I suspect the tire balancing. See if the shop that did it will redo it.

TIRES WERE AT 41 WHEN BALANCED. I INFLATED UP TO 47 FOR BETTER TIRE WERE AND LESS STRESS TO SIDEWALLS, THE DAY I LEFT FOR TRIP. IF TIRES ARE BALACED AT ONE PSI SETTING DOES THAT TROW OFF BALACE IF YOU CHANGE BY 6 PSI?

No, I do not think it does.

But I do think you could use some more air in your tires.

Go weigh your truck. Then we'll talk pressures. I think that you should run NLT 50psi in them. But that's just me...

Since you are using a tread design that was not "designed" for the Excursion, you may have to put up with any strange vibrations and such that happen.

Check and re-check the balance.

Also, brakes will only have an effect when braking.

what tires are designed for the x besides the steeletex by firestone. would 285 improve the ride or would it just be more tire surface to transfer more road bumps to the truck, and tougher to balace?

Whatever comes for the factory. What brand is being used now? Hmmmm...it's late, I cannot recall. My statement was more of a prepatory thing for you in case you go see the dealer. His reply will (may) be what I said...

Now I'm confused. We started talking about shaking and now we're talking ride improvement...

Fix problem #1 one. Let's try and figure out why it is shaking.

As for ride improvemnt...what, besides the above, do you want to improve?

Also, 285's can balance just as easy as any other tire. But any difficulties will be borne out of either 1. a poorly trained tech or 2. Brand of tire.

It may not be the tires. I had a similar situation and it turned out to be the rear driveshaft. A quick way to tell is to disconnect the rear shaft completely and take a drive in 4x4HI and see if the vibration is gone. If so then the driveshaft is the culprit. My problem was solved with new u-joints. However, some have had to replace the shaft completely...a few were lucky enough to have Ford do this for free. Before you remove that shaft make sure you make some alignment marks on it. Put a dab of paint on the shaft and put another on the axle yoke and transfer case yoke. This was you will know exactly how it was lined up because this too can affect driveshaft balance.

Now for the disclaimer...I don't recommend, and I'm sure no one else would either, that you drive for very long with only the front shaft. Could damage it from many things but mainly that all of the engine's torque is going through a shaft that was designed to get half because it was assumed by engineers that the rear shaft would be there to help in that department.

Oh yeah, one other thing. After I installed the new u-joints I still had a very slight vibration. I checked to make sure my paint dabs were correct and they were. So, I removed it from the axle side only, rotated it 180 degrees and reinstalled it. No vibrations ever since!

On another note, I just read a post from awhile back mentioning a tire balancing system called Centramatic. You don't have to have your tires balanced with these things and you can reuse them on any new vehicle you get as long as it has the same bolt pattern. It's not that powder stuff...I guess it's kinda like a harmonic balancer...sorta. Sounds like these will work awesome though. I'm thinking about getting em since I've got a set of 37" military HMMWV tires going on soon and they are hard to balance and keep in balance. If interested go to www.centramatic.com

No, I have nothing to gain from this...I just think they sound cool and will do a good job.

I can add the centramatics made a big difference in my x. I still have a minor vibaration at 80 mph and will look at drive shaft issues. I wonder if the driveshaft could be diagnosed by slipping the transmission into neutral and coasting to see if the vibration stopped at speed?
