I own a 2001 Ford Excursion Limited (v10) 4wd with almost every available option except a limited slip differential. Is it possible to change the diff currently in the truck with a limited slip diff from another excursion or purchase an eaton tru-track differential? Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

After hitting submit I figured I should be more specific. I have a axle type of 31 — 3.73 non-limited slip. My understanding is that I can find a C1 3.73 limited slip diff and just replace it. Is this correct? Also, if I find a C2 4.10 or C3 4.30 can I replace it with these as well? A friend of mine suggested just replacing it with a 35 spline posi diff instead of the factory limited slip because the pricing on a new unit was similar and posi was better than limited slip. I understand this is possible but would changing to a posi unit cause problems?

Well, to start with a differential swap is not that complicated. To do it right you should use gear marking compound to check the pinion depth after the swap, a dial indicator to check backlash and a good torque wrench. It shouldn't change but it's better than tearing it back apart. One thing to remember if you swap gears and the differential in the rear you'll have to change the front axle to the same numerical gear or the drive train will bind. If you change gears the speedo will be off also. I'd try changing just the differential. Have you thought about an aftermarket differential? Mike
