Over the weekend, we put the rear seat in the down position and will not come back up. The Latching Mech is broken in the down position. This is the third time this has happend. Twice under the original factory warranty. (one repair. one whole new seat mech.) It has failed again and Ford tells me that it is not covered under my Premium Extended Warranty, The service writer quotes the WARRANTY and said "TRIM" and "KNOBS" Are not covered!! By that logic the transmission is not covered because it is operated by a knob!

He has given me a 600 dollar quote (6 hours) to repair. Does this sound right?

Pissed Again Ken D.

$600??? OUCH!!! You could probably buy a new or slightly used rear seat for a lot less. Check ebay or internet classifieds. I think the Expedition and Excursion share the same rear seat, so check Expedition websites, too.

Good luck. I hate to hear of your misfortune.

Opps,

Not the rear seat, It is the second/middle seat, on the passenger side.

The service writer said "I entered the part number and the computer said it's not covered, because its a trim piece."

The Ford Warranty site said:

These are the only components NOT covered by Ford ESP PremiumCARE*

------ Snip!! ------- Removed exterior text -----------

Interior:
Buttons, carpet, dash pad, door and window handles, knobs; rearview mirror (glass, housing); trim, upholstery

****************************************
Do you think that would excludes the Seat Track Assembly?

For those that have access to Fords Parts list, last repair invoice shows they had to replace:

S17 GLASS, TRIM & BODY-FITS
102 WF4
144 WF4
1 YC3Z*7863160*AA FR.ASY.RR.ST.CSHN.RN

Sorry to hear about the problems you're having.....I used to be the service manager at our local Ferrari dealership (admittedly, a little different than what you're dealing with, but we also serviced Jaguars), and I can tell you from experience that an extended warranty company's dream is to be able to parse words and deny a claim.

It's my opinion that their position on your issue is totally bogus, but you'll have to go farther up the chain-of-command to get any relief. There must be a lower pay scale for the service department for them to repair under the ESP; otherwise, there'd be no real motivation for the local service department to deny a Ford company repair.......

If I were you, I'd take it up with the mgt. at the dealership, and if that didn't work, the owner, then the district rep, etc.....I agree with your reasoning: the "denied replacement knob" merely activates the part that failed.......heck, the parts in question are part of the same vehicle, so under their reasoning, shouldn't the whole car be unprotected under the ESP? (I acknowledge the use of hyperbole, but they'll often times use that sort of extravagant reasoning to deny a claim.......can you tell I don't have much confidence in extended-warranties)

Hope you get some satisfaction somewhere down the line....................

I'd try another dealer... AND/or bring your receipts for the previous repairs to the dealer that DIDN'T fix them the first time !!! I would think they should feel guilty for not fixing it properly the first two times...

If your warranty does not SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDE or INCLUDE a part, it can be used either way... but most of them cover the moving parts and high dollar A?C's etc.. VERY few of them cover everything, otherwise it would cost us $5000 instead of under $2000... but when I bought mine I got a list of EXACTLY what it covered...

Then there's always the test drive of one that matches the interior of your car swap trick... BUT, I would NEVER suggest that !

Well this is what happened...

Over the phone, I was not accepting the service writers answer. I insisted that it be repaired and it IS covered. The Knob and Upholstery answer was a bunch of doo-doo. It was upsetting me that he was fully standing behind the computers position. Without any thought or common sense of his own.

The following morning I met with him and he again went to the computer and entered the parts that needed to be replaced. When he returned to the counter he said they were in fact covered, and the problem was, he entered the part number used to replace the seat frame under the original factory warranty, not the ESP # he entered that day.

I hate being the untrusting SOB that thinks everyone is out to get me. But I think they float theses repairs to the customer and if we bite then they charge us time and materials. Could they even double Ford for the repair.

Things that leave a uneasy felling about this,

1. I can't believe that Ford maintains two sets of part numbers, Factory #'s vs. Extended Warranty.

2. How can he have any creditability again, after he argued that seat frame is " Upholstery and Knobs".

3. On this same visit my new leather steering wheel that was replaced two months ago was delaminating, and making noise. He replaced it (under protest) as a "courtesy". Nice of them to stand behind their work.....

Any of you Ford employees, please tell me I'm wrong here.

Too many days in Sunny California, Im-personal, I can't remember when I entered any business and had an employee call me by name. It's time to sell, and move to a small town.

I'm glad I bought my X before I discovered this site and some others. I've read SO much about the Ford service departments trying to screw the customers, I don't think I would have bought the truck. I do love it, but it is still brand new - relatively speaking.
Guess it all depends on the quality of the dealership.

Gary,

I don't want to give the impression that I don't like the truck. We love it! I read my post several days later, it's really is me whining in type while still upset.

However.. I still belive that it's my money, If you are going to ask me to hand you a fist full of it, you better have a gun OR a really good reason for me to part with it. The service writer didn't have either.

I will try a diffrent dealer on my next repair. It's a smaller shop and a little more personal.

Good luck Ken. I like the caption with you picture. It really is a mobile family room. One of the things I love about it.
