Hey, Steve,

here's the skinny on FWD...

1. Leave the hubs in the "Auto" position. If you look closely, on the hub itself is a small opaque dot that should be pointing to the "Auto" position. You can turn the hub manually to the "Lock" position and your front axel will remain engaged until you manually unlock the hubs. This is meant as a fail-safe technique in case you lose vacuum seal(s). Some guys like to lock their hubs in if they know they will need FWD and don't fully trust their ESOF or if they just want to rotate the parts in there without actually engaging FWD. Doing so will not hurt your X, but it will slightly hurt your MPG.

2. To engage 4x4 High just switch your ESOF to 4HI at any time at any speed up to 55 mph. *Insert personal note - I would not switch my X into 4HI at 55 mph. That is awfully fast for all those heavy differential parts to suddenly start turning and catch up to speed. I don't thing I've ever engaged FWD at a speed higher than 20 mph or so. Ford says you can do this and I suppose you can, but I wouldn't do it just for fun. Just my opinion. End personal note * You do not need to be in neutral for high range. However, you do need to at least roll a short distance to let the hubs engage. It is best to engage 4HI before you need FWD. Just not on a hard surface. To disengage 4HI simply switch ESOF back to 4x2.

3. To engage 4x4 Low range you must be stopped with the transmission in neutral and your foot on the brake pedal. Switch your ESOF from 4HI to 4LO. Choose a gear, feel the "clunk" of low range and you're off. To disengage 4LO follow the same procedure - neutral, foot on brake, switch ESOF to 4HI and put tranny in gear.

That's about it. Good luck with your X.
