I recently purchased a 1971. It doesn't have any markings as to model. GT, Base, Squire. Is there someway to identify the model? First thing I was going to order was window and door rubber and I need to know model. It has hardtop type door windows. Also, I need to replace or cover the dash cover. Anyone know of a good place to look? |

Look at the sticker in the door jam on the drivers side, it may say the model. If not find and write down the VIN number, which will have the model info in code.
Steele Rubber products have the weather, etc stripping you need, and they are not cheap.
As far as the dash, not sure.

Ketch is right that the VIN tells you. Here's how to read it on a '71. The VIN is 11 characters, on a tab on the dash at the driver's side of the windshield (readable from outside) and on the certification label on the rear face of the driver's door.
- 1st character: model year (1 = 1971)
- 2nd: assembly plant letter
- 3rd and 4th: the model
- 46 = Ranchero
- 47 = Ranchero 500
- 48 = Ranchero GT
- 49 = Ranchero Squire
- 5th: the original engine letter
- last six: the unit number
So a VIN that starts 1A47F is an Atlanta-built Ranchero 500 with a 302. The door label backs it up with a body style code: 66A base, 66B 500, 66C GT, 66E Squire. Once you have those two numbers, use them when you order the window and door rubber.
For the dash, it depends on how bad the pad is. A molded dash cap that glues over the original pad is the cheap, quick fix for a cracked pad, if you can find one listed to fit a '71 Ranchero or Torino. A reproduction or professionally recovered pad costs more but looks right if you're restoring the car. Either way, order by year and model so it matches the 1971 dash.
